We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maryanne Wayland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maryanne below.
Maryanne, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is something I struggled a lot with when I first got into the health and wellness space, especially trying to build a business online. Being on social media, you’re surrounded by people that are doing the same thing as you so it’s easy to get wrapped up in what they’re doing and how they are doing it. There were countless times that I completely changed the model of my business and the services I was offering to mirror what everyone else was doing because I thought that was the right way. This became exhausting and I quickly realized that I wasn’t being authentic and truly building a business that worked for me.
I had to sit down and ask myself, what does my ideal business look like? how do I want to service my clients? and what do I want them to get out of the experience of working together? Once I had an idea of what that looked like, I began working with a business coach that helped me bring my vision to life.
Even after putting together a business structure that worked best for me and supporting my clients, I still have to be mindful of what I choose to take in on social media. Its easy to fall into a rabbit hole of investigating what other people are doing which can send you spiralling and question what you’ve built or the information you’ve put out there.
You have to remember that at the end of the day what you do differently is going to make you stand out because no one else on social media or in your industry is you. I’ve learned that people don’t just want to work with me because I’m a nutritionist, yes of course thats a factor but they choose to work with me over anyone else in the industry because of the business that I’ve built and something about me resonates with them. If I gave into imposture symptoms I would fade into the shadows in my industry and operate a business that wasn’t authentic to me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a certified holistic nutritionist with a specialization in gastrointestinal health. I started my practice, Balance with Maryanne, to help women find the answers behind their digestive symptoms through functional lab testing.
Gastrointestinal issues are extremely prevalent, yet a majority of people suffering with these symptoms are left without answers to what’s causing them. When it comes to helping individuals that want to improve the way they feel and be comfortable in their own skin, this is where I believe our health care system has failed. If it’s not a major issue, or something doctors can prescribe a pill for, they’d rather not waste there time investigating what’s going on – but I have dedicated my career to doing just that.
In my practice I utilize the GI Map, a functional stool test that acts as a window into the gut microbiome and gives insight into the guts bacteria levels, pathogens, parasites, yeast overgrowth, and digestive markers to show how well the digestive system is functioning and what factors may be contributing to a persons symptoms.
I recently launched my GI Map interpretation package that helps individuals get the answers to their symptoms in as little as 2 weeks and receive a customized protocol based on their results to help them get started on their gut healing journey.
I also offer 1:1 Gut Health Coaching that empowers my clients to transform their health by uncovering the root cause of their symptoms and giving them the tools they need to get lasting results. Utilizing functional lab testing, I create customized protocols and offer unlimited support, to ensure they are always on track to achieving their wellness goals.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Never stop learning. Being in the health and wellness industry things are constantly evolving and there is always new information coming out. To help me stay relevant within my industry I sign up for a class or seminar every 6-months to dive further into a topic I already know or venture into learning something new. Doing this helps increase my confidence in the field and expands my knowledge on relevant topics. You can never truly know it all but you can make it a point to always keep learning.
2. My ability to stay true to myself and my journey without conforming to what others are doing. It’s easy to get distracted when we have the world at our finger tips and the ability to see what other people in the industry are doing which can create a lot of self doubt. Getting inspiration from others for new ideas within your business is great but you always want to circle back to making it your own and something that fits into the brand you’re trying to create. When you create a brand that reflects you, you show up authentically for your business which is what attacks your ideal customer or client.
3. Prioritizing my physical and mental health allows me to show up for my business everyday. When I first started my practice I ran myself into the ground trying to get my first clients and quickly realized the impact that this had on my business. I couldn’t show up as the best version of myself for my clients and the work I was producing reflected that. Putting daily nonnegotiable’s in place has allowed me to prioritize my wellbeing and in turn improve the way I show up for my business. Find a nonnegotiable that resonates with you, maybe it’s going for a walk, 10 minute meditation, or sitting in the sun, whatever it is schedule it into your work day so you always have it as a priority.
How would you describe your ideal client?
Someone that is determined to uncover the answers behind their symptoms and committed to investing the time and energy into themselves to improve their health and wellness.
A lot of women that I work with have been let down by the health care system and put through the wringer when it comes to uncovering why their symptoms are happening. Some may have worked doctors and specialists but are left in the dark if their lab results come back normal. It’s important that doctors do their due diligence to rule out serious conditions but when these reports come back inconclusive, patients are left with nowhere else to go.
An ideal client for me is someone that is fact driven and wants to see the evidence to what’s causing their symptoms, rather then guess what’s going on. They are motivated to make changes in their day-to-day life to help them reach their health goals and they feel empowered to learn how to best support their body long term.
