We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matt Clarkson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt Clarkson , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my parents, I had great examples of pushing and not giving up my entire childhood. My Dad was sick and in physical pain most of my teenage years until his passing in 2014, yet he still went to work every day, and he still worked tirelessly around the house until or after the sun went down. My mother was also working full time, working around the house and dealing with all the appointments, hospital stays and my Dad’s up and down health in general. Through all they faced day in and day out they still found time to make sure I never went without. My mother, in her 70’s just hit the year marker of surviving a broken hip coupled with a stage 4 ovarian cancer diagnosis like it was nothing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I just try to make music that will emotionally help even just one person out there. Music has always been my best friend at my lowest and highest points in life and there are so many songs that take me back to those moments instantly. If one of my songs can do that, or even better, help someone who’s struggling I will have achieved my goal. Matt Clarkson Band has a song coming out 10/08/2025 called “Used To” and we believe this is going to hit a lot of people right in the heart. I am also producing and editing the music video for it which is on track to be released late October 2025.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First, my dad told me early into my musical journey to never get to a point where you think there’s nothing left to learn, if you ever think that then you are wrong and have the wrong mentality towards being musician. Second, patience mixed with work ethic. This can be extremely hard because we all want to play that venue or that event and it doesn’t happen right away for many of us. Keep trying, even if you send 100 emails with no reply, keep trying. Lastly, in a world choking out creativity stay open minded. Listed to other artists in all genres, look for like-minded musicians and create with as many as possible. The more people you create with the more your own personal music will expand.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My wife. Though she is not a musician she keeps me grounded and levelheaded in the hard times and lives to lift me up. She is the level of selfless I aspire to be and is my best friend. In the times where I wanted to just call live music quits, and let life win, she is the voice telling me to keep trying because she knows what music does for my soul.
