We recently connected with Matt Drayton and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Matt with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my strong work ethic from my underprivileged background and a strong desire to change the path of my future and be successful.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an author and small business owner whose primary focus is on leadership and helping people succeed in business and in life. I am retired military, and I have been fortunate to have been exposed to and mentored by some of the best leaders our country has produced.
I have written two books about leadership and success, and I have also worked with nonprofits who support youth development. I also do voiceover work and I am a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified fitness trainer. I got my fitness certification to better understand fitness and aging but wound up working several fitness centers to understand how exercise science works when applied to individuals.
I am passionate about strong leadership, being active and living a healthy lifestyle. I really enjoy sharing my life experiences and lessons with others.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that were vital in my development and my journey were work ethic, integrity and compassion. All three played major role in helping me to be a better leader as well a better person. My advice to any aspiring leader or entrepreneur is to embrace these qualities if they truly want to succeed.
A strong work ethic allows you to persevere when things on your journey become challenging. Integrity is crucial for any leader, especially to gain the trust and respect from team members and your peers. Lastly, showing compassion and understanding to the plight of others helps leaders and business owners build strong and very productive teams.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge I face as an Author and Entrepreneur is time management and where to focus most of my time. As a husband, father, and business owner I am often torn between what to prioritize. This dilemma is common to many and usually can be extremely challenging. What I am currently doing to combat this issue is narrow my focus on what is most important and which milestones are the closest and need the most attention. I also have started to use the word “no” more frequently.
I have found that saying no to certain demands frees up a lot of my time. No, is word so many leaders and business owners refuse to use!
