Meet Matt Jenkins

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matt Jenkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

Regardless of the task or challenge in front me I’ve always had the attitude ” I’ll figure it out”. Quit or fail has never really been an option for me personally but, mindset is a big part of that. I’m not saying complete success is always the outcome. Within any challenge there are some aspects that are a success, and some that are not. I feel like the key is counting the wins and use that to motivate yourself to re-evaluate the shortcomings and see those through to a better outcome.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I own Saltwell Designs LLC. We do custom millwork and carpentry along with other installation services and are expanding those services as we see a need for within our expertise. The most exciting part about the custom work we do is when a client reaches out with a project in mind but doesn’t know exactly what the end result will look like. We work with the ideas the customer has and what they know they want and don’t want, make suggestions based on previous projects and our experience to deliver an end product that checks every box.

Our favorite projects and what we specialize in is complete custom projects. Whether it’s an odd space within your home that you want to utilize for cabinetry/shelving, a beautiful new front door that is inspired from a single aspect, or sculpted furniture different from anything else you have seen we take pride in creating quality, tailored to the individual.

We have a project in the works with a few companies that are contributing that I am very excited about. It’s a little early for me to share the details but i will be as soon as i can. 2026 we have 2 projects, one the first half and one the second half that we will be partnering with local charities to help with fundraising. We are still selecting the charities are excited to contribute to our local community.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Relationship’s, Communication, Self-accountability.

Quality relationship’s whether it be with customers, vendors, etc. are critical. The network of people you build within a business is more valuable than people realize. Having people, you can rely on when you need something and trusting that they will be able to facilitate that is irreplaceable when it comes to deadlines and delivering on your word. Positive interactions with customers should always be a priority. Those interactions can lead to a gain or loss of referrals and potential customers.

Clear communication between customers helps further those relationships. Do it well, and often. Never leave important aspects to assumption, confer with customers about expectations and details, timelines, etc.

Self-accountability is probably the most important aspect of the three. The willingness to accept mistakes and hold yourself to the standards you have set must remain above all else. If you fail to do so, then you cannot expect to hold others to the same standards.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

My children will always be my greatest achievement. I would spend every minute with them that I could.
