We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matt Valvardi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matt below.
Matt, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
In some ways, I have not overcome imposter syndrome at all. I always strive to do more, learn more, and be better, so I always have a little bit of room to grow more than I would have if I felt that I had already “made it”. When it comes to any art – whether it is acting or creating content, there are ebbs and flows of feeling both incredibly fulfilled and also not worthy. Hard work can dispel some of that uneasiness though.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My story began in the Philadelphia area, where in grade school I excelled in analytical subjects, like math – and also in various team sports. Back then, the one thing many people did not know, including my friends, was that I was writing screenplays, making movies, putting on productions, painting, sculpting, and so many artistic things. I continued that path for many more years of my life, working in investment management after college, but still longing to further tap into my creativity. That led me to Los Angeles, where I tried almost every job in entertainment and acting one could fathom. While acting had resonated the deepest with me – during Covid, I stumbled into content creation and video editing, which I also loved. My fiancé Lizzie is also an actress and content creator, so it’s great having a companion to go on this journey with. We’re also lucky to have 9 to 5 jobs that support our journey as we continue to grow our very social communities. We have five different social media accounts each with over 100,000 followers between YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok. Our total following is just under 2 million. We’re doing more food, travel, and couples comedy lately that has been resonating with our YouTube audience in particular.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I feel that any success I’ve had comes directly from my work ethic and desire to be the best at what I do. I always tell my fiancé Lizzie that our journey as content creators will be over when it isn’t fun anymore. But I have not experienced many moments where it hasn’t been extremely fun and rewarding. If you want to do something, content creation or not, then do it. Life is too short to be afraid of what others might think, especially if they’re just curious – plus they may actually be your biggest supporters in the end.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest challenge that most content creators are facing right now is the ever evolving world of the social media platforms. In my opinion, TikTok has become more of a shopping app and pushes a lot of political and Olympics content. That doesn’t leave much room for what made it fun in the first place, which was short form videos where anyone had the chance of going viral. There are days where YouTube and Snapchat views are inexplicably low and that can be extremely frustrating as well. I’m often asked what is the most important thing when it comes to social media, and I always say “consistency“. Even on bad days (or weeks) in terms of video performance, you must still create high-quality content.
