Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Cooper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matthew, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Both my mother and father. My mother was a registered nurse for over 40 years, transitioning from the hospital to home healthcare. When I was younger, I would sometimes go with her to see some of her patients. Seeing several patients per day, week after week, I watched her treat every single one with the same amount of care and respect without ever complaining.
My father is a screenwriter, I watched—and heard— him on the typewriter, work up screenplays endlessly and relentlessly.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a filmmaker and journalist from Baltimore, MD. My latest film is a passion project for me— a documentary on Baltimore’s squeegee kids. Growing up in the city, squeegeeing (cleaning car windshields) is a culture that is all around us. While I was excited to start this project, production took a turn the week I started in 2022, after a motorist was killed during an altercation with a squeegee worker. My documentary sheds light on the history and culture of squeegeeing while speaking with both parties of the incident, and giving viewers a look at the day in the life of a squeegee kid.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the first great quality to have is —cliche as it sounds—loving what you do. I truly am in love with film and filmmaking, I would go as far as saying an obsession.
I would also say patience and resilience. What I’ve learned is that success doesn’t always happen when you want it to, but if you keep working and stay consistent it will happen when it’s supposed to.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am looking to partner and collaborate with investors and other likeminded filmmakers for future projects.
