We recently connected with Matthew Garton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Blacksmithing was a real gift to me as a young man
It gave me my purpose and a real direction I never did well with conventional education
As I started to improve my craft it became a passion
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I focus on traditional blacksmithing and forgework using techniques that have been around for generations
Well made work designed with appropriate aesthetics in mind can last for hundreds of years
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Dedicatation focus and getting out of bed early will beat natural talent every time
Get up get out get motivated
My favorite quote from blacksmithing legend from Charleston sc Philips Simmons
“If you want your prayers answered get off your knees and hustle”
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Taught me the value of hard work and being the one people can rely on
