Meet Matthew Hemmer

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matthew Hemmer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matthew below.

Hi Matthew, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I’ve definitely struggled with many issues of motivation and drive throughout the years. I think the main focus that has always brought me back from the cliff is the reaffirmation that I am creating to satisfy myself. When I’ve lost sight of the main reason why I write and produce music, it’s been times where I have found difficulty envisioning my goals, and when I’ve been trying to shift my sound to appeal to different audiences and critics. There are also the problems that come with trying to make a living off of your craft. I’ve simply come to the conclusion that since creating new songs is what seems to fulfill my creative side the most, I should never stop doing it as long as it brings me satisfaction. Furthermore, as long as I am creating, I should always commit to doing it in my own way, and stay authentic in my self-expression. That way, I never have to look back with regrets about if I should’ve stayed more true to myself.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a songwriter and artist currently based in New York. I have been creating songs for the past decade, and have always tried to bring new ideas into the world that didn’t previously exist, or at least to present them in my own unique way. I welcome anyone to listen and either relate my songs to their own experiences, or use them as an outlet to experience something new. I view songs as ways to enter and taste other realities, or see the way things could’ve been for you in a different path or life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think first and foremost you have to know what you want and what your priorities are. If you aren’t sure that your desires are absolute, you won’t have conviction to fall back on when things get rough. However, if you are able to clearly conceptualize what is important to you, you will be able to use those things to stay moving in the right direction. I also think it’s important to have empathy – you will be constantly encountering other people with different goals and mindsets than you, as well as different backgrounds and priorities. That means sometimes you won’t understand the thought process behind someones actions. In moments like these, jumping to conclusions instead of trying to understand their position can lead to situations that would be much better avoided. Lastly, and this one can sometimes feel conflicting, I think you need to be able to communicate clearly. I think if you make it clear to people what you want, what your values are, and what you appreciate about them, everything will start to become much easier.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for more creatives to collaborate with! If you want to make something with me, look up my socials and send me a DM or email! Even a comment on a youtube video should eventually be seen!
