We recently connected with Matthew Kent Everett and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew Kent, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
I’ve always been physically active, so fitness has naturally been an important part of my self-care routine. However, since beginning my recovery journey in 2021, I’ve become much more intentional about nurturing my spiritual and emotional health. My life literally depends on me maintaining a balanced and holistic well-being.
Each day begins with a 6 a.m. workout, followed by a 3-5 mile prayer and meditation walk. I also try to incorporate at least one other element from my recovery program, whether it’s reading, journaling, attending a 12-step meeting, or checking in with a program partner.
This commitment has transformed every aspect of my life. I’m more present, sleep better, and experience a deeper sense of peace and happiness. I believe it has made me a more effective person—a better husband, brother, son, friend, musician, and leader. I truly enjoy life more now that I’m fully engaged and grounded in the present.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am honored to serve as the Artistic Director for *The Woodlands Diversion*, a nonprofit collaborative arts organization in The Woodlands, Texas. Our mission is to enrich the community and enhance the lives of its members through the power of the arts. We achieve this by curating performance events that blend diverse artistic disciplines—music, visual arts, movement, theater, literature, and more.
A core part of our vision is uplifting underrepresented artists. We are intentional about showcasing works by female artists, artists from non-Western cultures, ethnic minorities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, we are deeply committed to supporting student artists through grant programs and performance opportunities.
I believe that anyone with a public platform has a responsibility to consider the impact of the work they share. With so much art in the world, it is essential to foster diversity in all its forms. To ignore this is like a form of censorship, silencing the very voices that need to be heard. For me, this commitment to inclusion and representation is the true essence of artistic integrity.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Excellence, honesty, and consistency—these qualities are deeply connected. To me, they define authenticity. No matter what we do, we should always strive to be our best because our unique skills and talents are meant to serve others. My work is a reflection of my character. If I have the ability to create something excellent but choose to deliver less, I’m not being honest. Excellence isn’t optional; it’s a standard to uphold at all times. That’s why consistency is an essential part of honesty and living my life with integrity.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
First, I bring my feelings of overwhelm with me on my meditation and prayer walk, asking my Higher Power (God) for clarity. I seek guidance on what tasks I *must* handle myself—because only I can do them—and what can be delegated to my team. At the same time, I focus on distinguishing between what is urgent, non-urgent, important, and non-important.
After this, I write down everything that needs to be done. Then, I put my insights into action by organizing tasks, setting deadlines, and assigning responsibilities. Seeing everything written down helps me stay focused and prevents me from feeling paralyzed by an endless to-do list. While it may sound simple, this process keeps me from getting stuck in task paralysis and allows me to move forward with clarity and purpose.
