Meet Matthew Matson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matthew Matson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Matthew, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Growing up, the search for a purpose weighed heavy on my mind as I believe it does for so many people. Some seem to be born with an innate knowing of their purpose, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth for me. I felt lost for many years. My journey into healing and spirituality began at a young age, but it was always more of a thing that happened to me rather than something I thought I’d use for other people. I navigated the challenges of being an empath and encountering spirits as a child, igniting my lifelong fascination with spirituality. From age 16, I immersed myself in the vibrant atmosphere of metaphysical shops, learning from mentors of diverse cultural backgrounds. These formative experiences deeply influenced my understanding of energy and healing practices and drove a desire to help the world in some capacity.

This fascination of the spiritual world and the complexities of the human experience lead me to pursue undergraduate studies in Psychology with a focus on Family Studies and Child Development. This foundation further deepened my empathy and understanding, paving the way for my graduate studies in Social Work.

Through helping others and working on healing myself, I have found over time that my passion lies in empowering individuals to discover their innate power to heal themselves.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

For over a decade, I have been dedicated to the practice of energy healing, having achieved the level of Reiki Master, advanced practitioner of Integrated Energy Therapy (IET), and have extensively studied and continue to study various modalities of energy work to enhance my practice. In addition to energy work, My “regular human” job as a social worker has allowed me a deeper understanding of human development, social interaction, and trauma. I have seen first hand the need for, and benefits of, alternative healing in addition to modern western healing practices.

I currently reside in Albuquerque, NM where I conduct business under the name Matt’s Intuitive Healing. My goal is to help empower as many people as I can to reconnect to their own self healing abilities. I offer in-person and distance individual Reiki/IET services, energy work for pets, and teach in-person reiki classes for those who wish to learn. Online classes are in the works, but are not available at this time. As of now, I hold a regular full time job and offer sessions on the side which allows me to keep my prices low/affordable to reach as many people as possible. This time we are currently living in is one of great awakening and great chaos. I believe it is essential to remain accessible to everyone. I don’t ever want finances to be the reason preventing someone from seeking help. All services can be found at MatthewMatson.com

If you are on social media, feel free to find me on TikTok: matt.reiki. On there, I use my platform to host free live events where I bring together different energy practitioners and licensed therapists to discuss a variety of topics such as trauma healing, shadow work, chakra balancing, grounding etc. and explore the overlaps between modern mental health practices and traditional healing. It is a healthy balance of education and humor and is a safe space for all.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

In my opinion, the three most important areas of knowledge that I have obtain and believe are essential for everyone wanting to work with other people is having a knowledge of trauma, having a knowledge of self, and being open to new knowledge.

Knowledge of Trauma: Being trauma informed when doing energy work is crucial because it creates a safe, supportive environment for clients who carry unprocessed emotional wounds. Trauma often resides in the body and energetic fields. Without a trauma informed approach, energy work can unintentionally retrigger or retraumatize the client. It is important for the practitioner to understand the signs of trauma, respect client boundaries, prioritize consent and empowerment, and pace sessions appropriately. Folks new to this journey can seek guidance from their teachers/mentors, find trauma related workshops, read books, listen to podcasts, or even look for local continuing education classes on related subjects.

Knowledge of Self: It is important to know yourself before performing energy work because your personal energy can directly impact your clients healing experience. What are your biases, triggers, wounds, and emotional patterns? If you are unaware of your own resolved issues, you might unconsciously project them onto clients, misinterpret their needs, or overstep boundaries. Being self aware helps you stay centered, neutral, and compassionate. For those new to the journey, takes steps to work on you. Get energy work done for yourself. Go to counseling. There are many steps you can take to uncover that which hides within.

Open to New Knowledge: It is important to stay open to new knowledge and be willing to adjust your beliefs because healing is an ever evolving process. No one has all the answers, and both spiritual and scientific understandings are constantly expanding. If you become to rigid in your beliefs of what is the “right” way, you risk closing yourself off to new tools, insights, or techniques that could be beneficial. A true healer is a life long student, stay curious.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

The number one obstacle I face, and I believe so many other’s do to, is Imposter Syndrome. For the longest time I felt that having imposter syndrome meant I wasn’t ready to work on others. I had this idea in my mind that real healers are fully healed and don’t have these kind of issues. It has only been in the past couple years that I realized how wrong that is. No one is fully healed. We all have flaws and insecurities. And no healer, no matter how advanced, knows everything. Being in progress doesn’t mean you’re an imposter, it means you’re real. The key is to do it anyway.

The way to combat imposter syndrome is to do that which you think you can’t. Acknowledge that little voice in your head without judgement and then reframe your mindset. A simple path I follow when reframing is to recognize it, reconnect with my “why”, celebrating wins (big or small), accepting that learning never ends, practicing self compassion, and grounding myself.
