Meet Matthew Nye

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Nye a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Matthew, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

when my father passed it was my biggest fear and I lived through it, nothing could ever hurt me like that again, there is nothing left but to make my art till I pass

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an independent artist who uses music to explore the depths of the human experience. My songs offer poignant reflections on life’s highs and lows, resonating with a global audience. The most rewarding part of my journey has been hearing from fans who say my music has touched or even saved their lives.

I grew up in Broward County, Florida, in a small apartment with my father and grandfather. Their influence inspired much of my work. Poetry and hip-hop helped me find my voice during tough times, leading me from Hollywood, Florida, to Hollywood, California. I’ve had some acting success, including a role in Iron Man 3, but music has always been my true passion.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I released my first album, I’ll Be Fine, which sold thousands of copies and streamed millions of times. I’ve collaborated with legends like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Snoop Dogg, which has been a dream come true.

I’m excited about the future and eager to share more music. I release new tracks every week on all major platforms, and I’m looking forward to connecting with more listeners through my work.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I’d say the three most important qualities that have shaped my journey are resilience, authenticity, and curiosity.

Resilience has been crucial. The music industry can be tough and life is a lot fucking tougher, and I faced my share of setbacks. But each challenge made me grow and everything that broke me made me a better writer, everything that hurt me made a artist helped me create a better song, added grit to my voice and a sense of purpose it pushed me to keep going and improve. My advice to others is to embrace failures as learning experiences and never lose sight of your passion. take your pain and make it something special, or take your joy and spread it, whatever you are, there are others like you and they need a voice, so be that shit 🙂

Authenticity is key, shitty music with no soul and heart can be successful if pushed with a shit tone of money but in my opinion the key to connecting with people is Authenticity . Being true to myself and sharing my genuine experiences through music has helped me build a real connection with my audience. I recommend staying true to who you are, both in your art and interactions with others. Authenticity resonates and builds trust with listeners. its also impossible to hide, we all see you, so be you, if not it feels weird

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Money and finances are a constant struggle, just like for everyone else. It’s tough to stay motivated without emotional support or love. We all have a lot of shit inside us, and we can either use it as an excuse to do nothing or as fuel to do everything.

Right now, I’ve got $15 in my bank account. My music streams should bring in about $600 this month, and I’ll spend every penny back on my music. I’ll DoorDash at night if I need to, hustle, and find any odd jobs to make a buck. I leverage my accomplishments to get finances and make it work, even when I’m barely scraping by. Every month, I assume I might end up living in my car, but it makes for great music. One day, I’m sure I’ll appreciate the success that’s coming my way. but I also enjoy the struggle, or I enjoy there art that comes out of it

If it’s a choice between a good steak or an hour in the studio, I’ll eat an apple and head to the studio. If I’m feeling unsupported, I’ll write a song about it and find a way to record it. Set yourself a mission with small goals leading to bigger ones and keep at it. What else are you here for?
