Meet Matthew Sims

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew Sims a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Matthew, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

Starting young I set my life path to challenging/hard with selfish thinking and doing, which got me into a lot of trouble. For greater than 15 years I thought there was no way out of this hard life, that I was a victim of the system or circumstance. STUCK…Something finally clicked sitting a another jail cell and I realized that this wasn’t working and something had to change. I asked for some help and invested the next ten years changing my thinking and behaviors. I really needed to humble myself and understand that the world does not revolve around me and If I made it about others and understanding them then I got help from that for free. So I did. I dedicated my life to helping others. During this time I learned that the only restrictions in life are set by me. That is powerful. If they are set by me then I have the power to change that. If I was able to make it to this point in my life from I was I could do anything. Since this thought found me I have only looked forward and continued to push my limits. I now understand that anything can be done. If you want it it can happen your only restrictions are set by you. I have an extremely optimistic outlook on life now any negative thinking is my own and I can change it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I have overcome many challenges in my life, and now I am focused on self-improvement and helping others. My wife and I own a motorcycle shop that people can trust and feel comfortable coming to. We can repair most motorcycles quickly and efficiently, and we sell motorcycles, motorcycle parts, and riding gear. Our focus is on transparency, low cost, and a comfortable family feel where everyone is welcome.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Honesty is the most important skill I have mastered in my life. Most importantly being honest with myself. If you can be honest with yourself then being honest with others comes easy.
Accountability is probably the hardest skill to develop. It is imperative in owning a business if you want people to trust you and keep using your services. If you can own any mistake you have made and fix it, eventually your mind learns to focus and slow with whatever you are doing so mistakes become less and less in your life.
Attention to detail. I think by mastering these other skills it has taught me to pay attention to anything I am doing. This attention to detail allows me to produce a better service and not make very many mistakes.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My parents are amazing people who taught me right from wrong, a strong work ethic, and how to be kind to others. I chose a very different path and for years I was upside down in my life. That being said, they never gave up on me, even when they had to let me live and learn some things on my own. The most impactful thing they did was love me and forgive me. This kept me going.
