We were lucky to catch up with Maurice T. Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Maurice T., thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I was going through somewhat of a midlife crisis earlier in life and I remember tellng myself that I wanted a lifestyle change. I was not satified where I was in life and the lack of opportunites I felt that I should be recieving based on the hard work that I was putting in so I decided to take a risk. It is scary at first to make that leap. I found that some people that I thought were friends were critical of the noticible changes in how started to move. They would make jokes and backhanded compliments that tried to negatively eat at my self esteem. Some people even tried to marginlize my work, but I didn’t care. I was focused on my tasks and goals. The biggest step was just putting myself out there in the public eye which can be terrifying. I started my entertainment journey back in 2017. Once I started earning opportunites to get booked and being on sets, it could be a fashion show, a short film or commercial work etc, my confidence grew and I started to really believe I could do those things and make it a viable and paying lifestyle. The term “fake it till you make it” couldn’t be more true!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a full time Actor and Stunt Performer currently working in the SouthEast and based in Atlanta, Georgia. I have been working in the industry for 9 years with 6 years working in Georgia full time. I don’t have any side hussles. This is my full time “job!” What I love about working for myself is that I have 100% control of my time. It is also great being on set because every opportunity brings a different experience so work is always interesting! There is always new people, locations and connections to be made! The work is fun but it is also a serious career. If you don’t work, you don’t eat!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The biggest advice I can give to peopel early in their journey is just starting and putting yourself out there! That is 90% of the battle. It can be nerve racking opening yourself up to critique from friends, family and strangers in your life but you can drown out the noise and concentrate on becoming your best self! Everyone has to begin somewhere. Some other knowledge that impacted me on my journey is staying away from negative people. Not everyone will be excited for your journey especially if they may feel like you are leaving them behind. Other motto’s that have influenced me are “negativity breeds failure”, “success is the best revenge”, and “comparison is the theif of joy.” Concentrate on your own race!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always open to collaborate and create with like-minded artists and talent. This industry can be very much “what have you done for me now” so I like to stay booked and busy. You may reach out to me directly through my website for paid booking opportunites via email. I am also open to personal projects yet I am very selective for any non paid work. I usually only do these types of personal projects for people that I know or as small favors. I am very big about production quality and staying respectful and being professional.
