We were lucky to catch up with Mauricio De Riglos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mauricio, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I love movies and watching my colleagues or other photographers/videographers, being part of a community really helps you see things from another perspective and see what else you could do to improve your work. Everyone finds inspiration in a different way, and in my case, my inspiration comes greatly from movies, specially movies from A24 and Studio 8, which color grade is something always mesmerizes me. I think using inspiration and then apply it to your work its part of a learning curve, until you find the sweet spot of how you want your work to look.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a photographer/videographer in NYC, I usually shoot for electronic events on the weekends. For the time I have been doing this I feel I couldn’t have made a better choice getting into this business. It is fun, you meet a lot of people, make a lot of friends, capture those special moments of the crowd and the artists. It is something that really excites me, at the beginning I was more into street photography, which I still do sometimes, not as often as when I started, but I think it is important to keep doing it because it helps you find a different perspective of photography compared to the fast, crazy nightlife of NYC.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the most important skill is to be curious, I don’t know if that is a skill hahaha but curiousness opens your mind to learn new things, see them from another perspective and also be humble about your work. There is always some improvement in what you do and it is important to see and listen the experts about their experiences and what you wanted to achieve and I think that helps you find your way to do things, your unique way. Another important quality is to be open to others opinion and not take it personal, whether or not they are right, it is good to hear what other people think about your work because that also opens another perspective that you might be missing. And the third quality or skill I would say would be consistency, it is important to keep working, even if you don’t have a gig or something you can always pick your camera and go out and take some shots, see how you work with the current light of the environment, street or concert, every venue and performance has a different setup which translates in a different light scenario for which you need to adapt, try, test and see how well you can do.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I usually go for a walk, like an hour walk, listen to some music, maybe go to the park and sit down, looking for clarity and enjoyment of the present, so when I come back to work I feel fresh. Also working out, which is something I do on and off during the day, I like to take small breaks, that way I always feel fresh. Some things I forget to do sometimes is to eat, because I focus so much and lose track of time, and when I see the clock its like dinner time and I missed lunch hahaha. It is easy for me to tunnel vision when I do work but that is something I also need to improve, for the good of my health.
