We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maurizio Tangari a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maurizio, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My name is Maurizio Tangari fitness trainer and the inventor of Hydro Core Bag, www.hydrocore.world a water filled fitness Training tool distributed by Onnit in USA and winner of 2020 Men’s Health Best Strength Training Tool. I’m based in La Jolla Village.
Probably in different stages of life we have different purpose, when you are young and stupid you always set goals on more than one purpose, usually are superficial or unrealistic, is a process to figure out what is your purpose in life and most of the time it comes to you in a very mysterious way. You don’t see it right away because is not connected to your work or your life in any way or form.
My HydroReach non-profit organization probably have been my purpose, this project came to me out of nowhere. I was in the process of testing a new fitness training tool I invented while ago, a bag filled of water (https://www.hydrocore.world) that use the concept of instability in order to create an effective workout that ‘shakes’ your entire body and fire your muscles. I was at the first stage of this project, final design, testing exercise, material, durability… I remember was a very hot day and I was at the beach in La Jolla (CA) and just came up to me that I forgot to carry with my my drinking water, I did not want to go back home so I started to drink the water I used to fill up my product… that was the moment that came to me… my purpose.
Went back home and I called a friend of mine, I remembered he was running a fundrise for building a water well in south America, I invited him to come to my house to discuss my vision without telling him exactly what it was, when he came over and saw my product it toke only one second to him to see my vision, That was the moment that HydroReach Project (https://www.hydrocore.world/hydroreach) was born, that was the moment I figured out that was my purpose in life.
HydroReach Project mission is to provide a better way to transport and purify water in different villages on the planet. Because of its intricate design, the hydro reach water bag allows anyone to carry water over their shoulders over long distances hands free. This frees up the water transporter in such a way giving them the freedom to carry a child, climb, carry a basket of fruit, etc. The unique saddle design also makes it possible to stack more than one hydro reach water bag on top of a donkey, a cow or a goat.
“When water is being transported with buckets on the head this leads to a host of health issues ranging from postural problems, arthritis, early onset disc degeneration, and eventually compression fractures in the cervical spine. Problems like these can cause chronic pain, headaches, and migraines as well as a host of other neurological conditions. The unique design of the HydroReach bag will not only provide a safer, more efficient way to transport water, it will also change the health and wellness landscape for so many. By placing the water around the shoulders it alleviates the stress to the head and neck allowing for a greater expression of health in the communities. This will help not only improve the quality of the water, but ultimately the quality of life for so many”.
The hydro reach project will find hydro reach water bags for families in need of transporting water all over the world. Volunteers will travel to different villages in high need areas showing people how to maintain the bag properly, as well as physically filling up the bags at the water source throughout the purification process. Getting clean fresh water has never been easy. Most often people have to cross rivers, climb steep hills or go down deep hills.
Being able to secure the Hydro Reach bag on one’s shoulders means that not a single drop of water has to spill. This makes gathering water much faster and not a single drop has to be spilled. Attached to the Hydro Reach water bag there is a mini water filtration system that can provide 0.1 micron absolute filtration, removing 99.9999% of all bacteria such as cholera, e.coli, salmonella. Removing also 100% of micro-plastic.
UNICEF regions with lowest coverage of ‘improved’ sanitation in 2006 were SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA (31%), SOUTHERN ASIA (33%) AND EASTERN ASIA (65%). In 2006, 7 out of 10 people without access to improved sanitation were rural inhabitants. Across all 24 countries examined, including SIERRA LEONE, MALAWI AND NIGER, more girls were tasked with water collection than boys, women were also the primary water collector in all countries. At least 17 million women and girls in Africa are also more likely to be responsible for collecting water for their family, making it difficult for them to attend school during school hours, which increases their risk of sexual abuse. Many women cannot earn an income because of the time and energy it takes to collect water. People also have to contend with water-borne diseases like SCHISTOSOMIASIS, an infection caused by parasitic worms living in freshwater. The daily practice causes MUSCULOSKELETAL damage, soft tissue damage and can lead to early arthritis. Also young girls and woman are target of human trafficking during the transportation of water, usually they have to cover between 4 to up 10 miles a day carryng two buckets full of water!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I moved to San Diego in 2013 after having been an owner of a bed and breakfast in my home town of Vieste in Italy. My wife whom I met in Italy, was American and after she became pregnant, we decided that we wanted to give birth in the USA. Our daughter had some heart problems and needed open heart surgery when she was born, it was at this moment that I realized that I needed to sell my bed and breakfast and move to San Diego permanently. As a foreigner in a new country with no job, I realized that being a personal trainer was the best thing I could do for myself and our family. My daughter is my hero and she inspires me every day, gives me strength and energy. She definitely gave me a more positive way to look in life. Amazing how in just 24 hours after surgery she asked to stand up and walk, she definitely taught me a big lesson. After few years in USA, I realized that being a personal trainer for the rest of my life was not really what I want to do and I started developing an idea for a new fitness piece of equipment, HydroCore https://www.hydrocore.world.
I always believed my invention was a great idea and never for one moment I gave up on pursuing my dream of one day seeing my invention on the fitness market. It was a long way full of negative people telling me all the time that was a stupid idea and no one will invest on it. You will be surprised of how much negativity comes first from the people so close to you, family members and friends. When I started working on HydroCore, I had no idea what I was doing, I had no experience on product development or how to negotiate or get on touch with investors, but this never stopped me on educate myself and research how to do so. Finally in October 2019 right before the pandemic after almost three years on working on my project, I was able to put my invention on the market, thanks to ONNIT, a fitness company owned from famous ex MMA fighter Joe Rogan, he also run one of the most listened podcasts Joe Rogan Experience.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe in good vibes and positive energy, If you are good to someone eventually someone else will be good to you. You can call it good luck or karma, but at the end we all need to be positive and smile. Is so simple if you think about.. I started traveling around the world when I was age 16, I dropped school cause my parents had no money to send me to college and I could not see a future for me in a small town in south Italy. The first person that encouraged me to do so was my Grandfhater, he was an Italian American immigrant, he worked in Germany in a coil mine and after he moved to USA to work.. I remember he told me always to smile, be kind and learn how to speak new languages. Those advice really helped me, being kind most of the time helped me to get a free meal and a place to sleep. It was not to hard for me to translate all this lifetime experience into business, I believe in teamwork and good attitude and I can see how this totally help my business to be more successful.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Definitely understand more about the process of developing a good product was not simple, I had to design more than 15 prototypes in 3 years before I had finally the one I like it. At the begin I was very discouraged and frustrated when I was showing my idea to different companies, can’t count anymore how many times they told me that was a stupid idea, but probably cause of all this negativity I became more stubbier and I convinced myself that I had really nothing to lose. My advice is, believe in yourself, advices are great, but most of the time are coming from people that never achieved anything in life, listen your heart and be patient. There are no obstacles, only challenges in life and is up to you to give up or keep moving forward no matter how many time you will fall.
