We recently connected with Max Ferro and have shared our conversation below.
Max, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered my purpose through my deep love for soccer and my experiences in coaching. It all started in Florida, where I began training youth players, igniting my passion for developing talent and fostering a love for the game. This initial experience led me to coach youth teams across Long Island, where I found immense joy in guiding players aged 8 to 16.
Currently, I coach five teams in Hauppauge, and I also serve as the Director of Intramurals and Academy for the Hauppauge Soccer League. These roles have allowed me to not only teach the fundamentals of soccer but also to instill values like teamwork and resilience in the young athletes I work with.
Two years ago, I had the opportunity to step up to a higher level as the head coach for a UPSL side, which was a significant milestone for me. This experience broadened my perspective on the game and coaching at a semi-professional level. It inspired me to branch out and create my own UPSL club, NY Empire FC.
What truly fuels my purpose is witnessing the enjoyment of our hundreds of fans and players when we succeed together. Seeing their excitement and passion for the game reinforces my commitment to coaching and developing a strong soccer community. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that I can make a positive impact in their lives through the sport we all love.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
When asked about what I do and what makes me special, I love to highlight my journey in coaching and managing NY Empire FC. My passion for soccer has always been a driving force in my life, and it led me to create a club that not only competes at a high level but also fosters a vibrant community around the sport.
As the manager of NY Empire FC, I’ve had the privilege of building a team and a culture that resonates deeply with our fans. One of the most special aspects of our club is the incredible fan base we’ve cultivated here on Long Island. We’ve broken national records for attendance in the UPSL, which speaks volumes about the excitement and commitment our supporters bring to every game. It’s a testament to the connection we’ve forged with the community, and it motivates both the players and coaching staff to perform at their best.
Competing in the prestigious Lamar U.S. Open Cup has been another significant milestone for us. It not only challenges our team on a national level but also showcases the talent and dedication we have. The opportunity to compete against teams from all over the country is thrilling, and it elevates the profile of our club and our players.
What makes me special, I believe, is my unwavering dedication to creating an inclusive and engaging environment for players and fans alike. I’m committed to ensuring that every individual involved with NY Empire FC feels valued and inspired. This passion for fostering connections and building a strong soccer culture is what drives me every day.
Ultimately, it’s about more than just winning games; it’s about uniting a community and celebrating the love of soccer together. Seeing our fans come together, cheering for our team, and sharing in our successes is what truly fulfills me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Leadership: Effective leadership has been crucial in both coaching and managing NY Empire FC. It’s not just about making strategic decisions but also about inspiring and motivating players and staff. I strive to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute, which fosters teamwork and a strong sense of community.
Communication: Clear and open communication is essential in coaching. It allows me to build trust with my players, understand their needs, and convey strategies effectively. Additionally, engaging with our fan base and creating a dialogue around our club has been vital in growing our support on Long Island.
Adaptability: The ability to adapt to new challenges has played a significant role in my journey. Whether it’s navigating the competitive landscape of the UPSL or adjusting our strategies during games, being flexible and open to change has allowed us to thrive. This adaptability extends to my approach in building NY Empire FC, where I continually seek innovative ways to enhance the club and engage with our fans.
These qualities have not only shaped my growth as a coach and manager but have also helped create a positive and dynamic environment for everyone involved with the club.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The person who has been most helpful in my journey is undoubtedly my father. Watching him work tirelessly throughout his career as an attorney has been incredibly inspiring. He started from nothing and built a successful business through sheer determination and hard work.
His commitment to excellence and resilience in the face of challenges taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and integrity. Moreover, his dedication to giving back to the community, especially within the Latino market, has shown me the importance of using one’s skills to uplift others.
Seeing him navigate obstacles and maintain a strong sense of purpose has significantly influenced my own approach to coaching and managing NY Empire FC. His example has instilled in me a desire to not only succeed personally but also to create a positive impact in my community, just as he has done.
