We recently connected with Max Weisman and have shared our conversation below.
Max, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I believe that it takes a village, and I’m a product of current and former mentors, colleagues, professors, and peers. I am proud of my professional success but always compare myself to those in the field I aspire to work alongside. My work ethic comes from watching and working with these industry leaders who put in a long day’s work while also finding time for family, friends, and personal passion.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the Communications Director for City Councilmember Isaiah Thomas and the Principal of my communications firm, Halom Strategies. In addition to all previous roles, both focus on storytelling and branding. I’m most excited when I meet someone (a person or an organization) with a fantastic story who needs help telling others about themselves. Working personally on their pitch and brand and watching them grow in confidence and passion is humbling and energizing. I am always grateful when people show their vulnerability and allow me to be a small part of their process.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful skills on my journey were networking, listening, and creative thinking. Many of my early successes came from mentors and leaders, who allowed me to observe and learn in influential spaces. I could meet people I respected, see how they interact with each other, and learn my craft firsthand. As I continue to grow and navigate my career, my network continues to be a driving force. My big takeaway is to focus on your network and relationships in an authentic and nontransactional way.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone in their career who has just hit a moment of growth and wants to optimize it. Whether this person got a promotion, had a viral moment, can be a logical spokesperson for the current moment, etc. I like to work with people who are intelligent and qualified in their field but have not had experience with public speaking (media, presentations, panels, interviews) or do not know how to define their brand. With media training and branding, I can often work with these up-and-comers to ensure their moment is a stepping stone, not just a moment in time.
