Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maxie Contreras. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maxie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I have learned to be effective and efficient in any room I walk into. Looking different is something I’ve been accustomed to as a child. I’ve always stood out and have been the black sheep in every area of my life; family, school, work, etc. It’s something I’ve learned to take pride in confidently because I know what I’m capable of and I know my strong assessts. Therefore, when I walk in a room and realize I am 1 of 1 I am eager to show ALL I can do!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My business Max’d Out Browz is a cosmetic tattooing business. I connect with and help women regain their self confidence by giving them a second chance at eyebrows and enhancing such a focal part of our faces; the lips. I have always had a strong calling to help others. After my medical career came to an abrupt end, I decided I can still help people. Just in different ways now. The joyous reactions, the tears shed, the connections that are made is what empowering women is all about.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Some impactful qualities throughout my journey have been communication, authenticity, and self-belief. If you show up as your true authentic self people can relate and connect on a more personal level, and that’s what this generation wants. They want to know YOU. Self belief will keep you persistent and help you persevere. I believe as a business owner, you’ll learn more along the way if you just jump into it. You’ll learn more hands-on than any book or course could teach you.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
An ideal client for Max’d Out Browz would be someone who is respectful of myself, my time and my craft. Someone who knows how to properly value and appreciate art. Someone who understands that artists are humans aswell, and our skills may not be 100% everyday but our efforts are. A patient and trusting client. My work of cosmetic tattooing comes with high emotions, and I need full trust from my clients to proceed confidently.
