Meet May Alamar

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to May Alamar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

May, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

In my eyes, keeping my creativity alive is the same as simply being alive. I’ve always had a distinct sense of style, even from a young age, and designing allows me to nurture and express it. The encouragement of my friends and family has been a constant source of motivation, pushing me to grow creatively. I challenge myself regularly, finding inspiration everywhere I go. When I face creative blocks, I overcome them by exploring new patterns or experimenting with different mediums. It’s this continuous cycle of exploration and expression that keeps my creativity thriving.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Creativity has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From a young age, I’ve loved working with my hands, experimenting with different materials, and bringing ideas to life through crafting. Over the years, my passion for sustainability has become a driving force in my work. I’m always looking for ways to reuse and upcycle old materials, transforming them into something new and beautiful. Whether it’s repurposing scraps into a statement piece or turning forgotten items into functional art, I find immense satisfaction in blending creativity with eco-consciousness.

I thrive on the challenge of experimenting with new techniques and ideas, which makes custom projects especially exciting for me. I approach every order as an opportunity to push my creative boundaries and deliver something truly unique. Everything I make is handmade and one-of-a-kind, with pricing thoughtfully calculated based on the time, effort, and materials involved. My goal is to create high-quality pieces that are accessible to a wide range of customers while reflecting the care and dedication that go into each item.

Most of my business is based in Boulder, Colorado, where I have built strong connections within the local community. However, I also enjoy sharing my work with customers beyond the area by offering shipping options.

Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with the label Too Flame, creating pieces that were featured at New York Fashion Week. This incredible experience was both inspiring and humbling, reaffirming my commitment to delivering exceptional, original designs. If you’re looking for sustainable, handmade creations with a personal touch, I’d love the chance to work with you and bring your vision to life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

-thinking outside the box
-adapting when things go wrong
-finding a way to fave fun with my projects and make everything special and un ique

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

I think it is great to find ways to play to your strengths, but adaptability, especially in my work, is extremely important. Part of what I think is fun about the work I do is figuring out how to move forward if something is not turning out the way I wanted it to.

I am also new to this industry and still figuring out the tricks of the trade so whenever an opportunity arises I have to be able to figure out what it is and how to work with it.
