We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful May Fearnley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with May below.
May, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
As a professional Belly dancer/chorographer/instructor, I gain my confidence and self-esteem throughout the years of experience. It was not easy to begin due to my body type and ethnicity and how world of eyes focus in different areas than artistry. I have had criticism and failure about my work, I failed and I got up and make me stronger and better next time. I also proved to myself and others by winning multiple competition, festival performance and theater performance throughout the years.
Do not compare with other dancers, we all unique in our own way and know you worth and believe in yourself.
Follow your heart, follow your soul, follow your dream and immersed with music.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am original from Hong Kong. Champion of standard ballroom dancing. I moved to USA to pursue my full time position at the apparel industry. I had stop dance more than 15 years to raise my daughter and focus on my family.
I started Belly dance 13 years ago. I first take dance class once a week and gradually study with master teacher worldwide and I went for 1st audition 2014. by 2019 I become professional belly dancer.
My dance partners and created “M & M Entertainment” specialize in birthday parties, weddings, anniversaries, retirement, graduation, corporate events an more. I tailor our performance to what customers needed.
I love to share our dance art and culture; I am trill to see smiles on audience faces and make their days unforgettable.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
musicality – connecting to live music, keeping to rhythm, showing melody, anticipating music.
techniques – isolations. fluidity, depth of movement , extension, completion, posture, arm frames, bodylines, footwork and transitions.
personality- interaction with live band(if any) and audience. Professionalism. Expressiveness. Mood. poise.
Start with strong foundation by learning basic techniques, taking class from different teacher, workshop and attend to festival. Perform or compete in live event.
Practice is main key of success.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My dance coaches who can see your strength and weakness that you won’t see as soloist.
