Meet Maya Rosalia

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maya Rosalia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Maya , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

From a young age, I was fortunate to discover my purpose. While many of my peers are still exploring their career paths, I found clarity early on. There are both advantages and challenges to knowing one’s calling at such a tender age. I realized around eight or nine years old that my passion lay in the music and entertainment industry. Immersed in dance, acting classes, and piano lessons, I was constantly surrounded by music. My mother, who studied musical theater, filled our home with the songs of top musicals, which I grew to love.

What intrigues me most about entertainment and music is their collaborative nature. Even as a child, I involved my friends in my creative endeavors, choreographing dances, staging performances, acting in plays, and writing stories together. When I was nine, I formed a girls’ group with some friends, which was a thrilling experience. Performing our original songs and creating music that was uniquely ours solidified my desire to make this passion a central part of my life.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an independent singer-songwriter with a deep interest in the business and production aspects of the music industry. My lifelong dedication to songwriting has been nurtured through academic studies and mentorships. Literature and poetry have been significant sources of inspiration for my work.

The path of an independent artist can be challenging due to the extensive responsibilities it entails. However, I am fortunate to have a robust support system and valuable connections within the industry. Despite the daunting nature of starting from scratch, I remain driven by my passion and vision.

I am thrilled to announce the completion of my very first music video. This project has been a dream of mine since I began writing songs at a young age. The video’s ambiance and aesthetic beautifully capture the fairy-tale, royal princess vibe I have been infusing into my music, bringing my artistic vision to life both sonically and visually.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Creating my first music video was a far more intricate process than I had anticipated. When I was younger, I used to make videos on Video Star and iMovie, and I imagined the process would be much simpler. One segment of the video was filmed at sunset, meaning we were on set all day. I started around 7 AM and didn’t wrap up until around 8:30 or 9 PM. It taught me the importance of being adaptable and managing expectations.

While I always strive to do my best and set high goals, working on a music video requires clear communication and patience, especially when collaborating with cinematographers, directors, and editors. I tend to want things done quickly, but I’ve learned that achieving perfection can take time.

For my latest song, “You Never Cared,” the music video took about three years to complete! Despite the lengthy process, I remained committed to my vision and collaborated with the right people who shared my dedication. The final result made all the hard work worthwhile. This experience reinforced the importance of perseverance and surrounding yourself with a supportive team.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always eager to collaborate with talented individuals! I love working with other songwriters and producers, and I am particularly excited about creating more music videos. I am constantly on the lookout for directors, editors, and actors to bring my visions to life. I have some wonderful ideas for the next era of my music, which I promises to be highly collaborative!

My time at music school immersed me in an environment filled with producers, songwriters, and singers. This experience emphasized the importance of collaboration, and I continue to work with many of the talented people I met there. Consistency, strong work ethic, and clear communication are essential traits I seek in collaborators. One of my pet peeves is inconsistency; flaky people drive me mad! I value those who keep their promises and stay true to their word, as I strive to do the same.
