We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maycon Devon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maycon, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
It was not easy. You know when you’re depressed or going through a phase of sadness, a lot of things come to your mind. Some people say it’s easy, or it’s not real, or even that we’re just being lazy, and they don’t understand until they’re the ones going through it. That’s why I say you should never judge a book by its cover, because you never know. Some of your favorite artists, YouTubers, or influencers might be depressed or going through rough phases in life, and you wouldn’t know.
I’m a beauty creator, and it can be really rough sometimes. The thing is, when you’re an influencer or content creator, it’s very much like a job. Even though you’re sad, people don’t care about that; they just want to be entertained. That’s what we’re here for: to entertain.
So, when I was depressed, I had to handle it on my own. Creating content—makeup tutorials, product reviews—was the way I dealt with my depression.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve always wanted to create content about makeup. I love makeup; it’s an easy way for me to show people what I do best. It can be really frustrating to post sometimes because the algorithm doesn’t always help us, but creating content is what I’m good at. I’m so grateful that the internet today has made it possible for us to turn this passion into a job, without needing to work 9-to-5 jobs anymore.
What thrills me about creating makeup content is the ability to express myself, teach, and review products. I love showing people the best products for their needs and helping them find what they’re looking for. Many people rely on us creators to guide them in their purchases. Unfortunately, some creators lie for money, which is why many people don’t trust influencers these days.
However, as a member of the beauty community, I can confidently say that this is a small percentage. Most of us create content with the best intentions. Those who deceive their followers for money cannot be considered true content creators.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I can say that one of the three skills that helped me succeed is this: makeup. I don’t know if I can fully consider makeup a “skill” because it came so naturally to me. The moment I got my hands on makeup products, I learned so quickly. I know makeup isn’t super hard to learn, but I’ve seen people struggle with it even after years of practice. For me, it was different—I learned fast because I wanted it so much.
The second skill that helped me was learning English. Mind you, I’m not American; I’m Brazilian. Learning English as a second language was essential for me to live in this country and eventually become a makeup creator in the USA. It took a lot of effort to become fluent, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the work I put in to master it.
The third skill that has always been with me is persistence. I never give up—ever. From the day I figured out what I wanted to do, I set my goals and decided that no one, no matter who, could stop me from achieving them. My advice to people who want to create content—no matter the type of content—is this: never give up. Even though I’m still a small creator, I’ve learned a lot, and I know numbers don’t define me.
Ask yourself, “Is this truly what I want, with all my heart?” If the answer is yes, then fight for it. Don’t rely on other people’s opinions or the algorithm to determine your worth. Keep pushing forward and make it happen—it will be yours. The best way to achieve your dreams is by trying, again and again. While you’re working toward your goals, take everything as training and learn from it.
Remember, every small achievement is still an achievement, no matter how small. If you learn to celebrate the small wins, you’ll be even more grateful for the big ones. Keep going—you’ve got this!
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my mom did for me was, without a doubt, being proud of me. Despite being a religious person, she supported me fully, even going so far as to buy makeup products for me. She’s never given up on me, and even now, she encourages me when I’m feeling down. She’ll ask, “Have you posted today? Did you record a video today?” If I haven’t, she’s like, “Get your a*s up and go record some content.” She helps me snap back into focus and reminds me of who I am and what I stand for.
When it comes to my identity, I know who I am, but it can’t be simplified as just a boy or a girl. I’m simply me—a human being who lives authentically and follows how I feel. My mom respects that, and she’s proud of me for staying true to myself and chasing my dreams. Her support means everything to me.
