We were lucky to catch up with Mayra Malik recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mayra, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Being in the beauty industry it’s important to know that you never know everything. Things are changing constantly and after being in the industry over twenty years I promise you things are way different than they were when I started. Keeping an open mind, staying determined to learn more, and keeping the ability to evolve has allowed me to overcome any creativity block.
“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow”
-Anthony J. D’Angelo
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are a team of on location or in studio hair and makeup artists. We get you and your guests ready for any special event. We offer traditional makeup, airbrush makeup, and hairstyling as well as hands on classes for those who want to prefect their everyday makeup. My favorite part about my job is getting a bride ready on her wedding day. This is one of the most important days in a woman’s life and to be able to be a part of that is a feeling words can’t describe. We make it a priority to provide not only a beautiful hair and makeup service but a memorable experience. Seeing the tears of joy and happiness in our clients is what warms my heart.
Now that I have built and established Simple Beauty Artistry, I’m ready to peruse my other passion, teaching. My goal this year is to launch Simple Beauty Academy. A fun, hands on, and inspiring school where aspiring artists can perfect their craft and learn to be successful. Whether it’s starting your own business or wanting to work in the industry, I plan to provide the knowledge and skills to those entering the industry to succeed.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three most important qualities and skills that I have learned throughout my journey would be 1) to always be open to criticism. Accept when you make a mistake and learn from it. 2) never stop having fun, enjoy what you do and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. 3) know your worth! Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do what you do. Value yourself and those who admire and follow you will know your worth.
I will say, these lessons came with time, experience, and some challenges. It’s a lot easier said then done but never look back if you want to keep moving forward.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I have always struggled with is setting boundaries. When I was younger I was so eager and determined to please and was willing to work all day and all night. But when I got married and started a family, trying to find and keep a balance has been extremely difficult. I often get clients texting and calling at all hour of the night, texting on my days off, or calling with quick questions. Setting boundaries and keeping to them has been the most difficult challenge. My children are growing up so fast and I want to spend as much time with my family as I possibly can as well as keeping my clients happy with our service.
