We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mckayla Kaardal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi McKayla, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is pretty wild in the entrepreneur world! It’s so easy to see other’s online and compare yourself! Where your focus goes, your energy flows is such an awesome way to look at business! I have learned to focus on my growth instead of where others are.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I make the cutest and comfiest headbands for literally everything! ✨ From wedding receptions to workouts, I’ve had so much fun creating custom headbands for all kinds of occasions. Sewing them is such a relaxing process, but the best part? Packing up orders, knowing someone is about to receive some happy mail! 💌
One of my absolute favorite things is seeing all of you rocking your headbands on social media—whether you’re training for a race, crushing a workout, or just adding a cute touch to your outfit. It’s amazing to see the many ways they get worn! 😍
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Starting a small business has been such an incredible journey, and I’ve learned so much along the way! Here are the three most impactful lessons I’ve learned:
1. Progress Over Perfection – It’s easy to get caught up in making everything perfect, but the most important thing is to start. You learn and improve as you go!
2. Consistency is Key – Success doesn’t happen overnight. Showing up every day, even in the small ways, adds up over time and keeps your business moving forward.
3. Your Community Matters – The support from customers, fellow small business owners, and online friends makes all the difference. Engaging with your community and building relationships is just as important as the product itself!
If you’re thinking about starting something of your own—do it! You’ll learn, grow, and surprise yourself along the way. 💕
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Looking back, I realize just how much my parents shaped me into the person (and small business owner) I am today. The most impactful things they did for me?
1. Raising me on a farm – Hard work, responsibility, and resilience became second nature. Early mornings, long days, and caring for animals taught me discipline and dedication.
2. Putting me in 4-H – This pushed me way outside my comfort zone! Whether it was public speaking, showing animals, or learning new skills, 4-H gave me confidence and a strong work ethic that I still carry with me today.
3. Encouraging me to play team sports – I learned teamwork, perseverance, and how to handle both wins and losses. Sports taught me that success takes practice, and setbacks are just part of the journey.
All of these experiences shaped my mindset, work ethic, and the way I run my small business today. I’m beyond grateful for the lessons they instilled in me!
