Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meagan Licari. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Meagan , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
As someone who has been rescuing cats from the streets of NYC for years, I have seen more suffering and hardship than most people could imagine. These animals, many of them sick, injured, or abandoned, don’t have a voice to ask for help, and that’s where I come in. My generosity comes from an innate sense of responsibility to be that voice. Every cat I rescue is a life that deserves a chance at happiness and love, no matter how challenging their situation. The bond I’ve developed with these animals – especially the ones with medical needs or emotional trauma- has deepened my compassion and made it impossible to turn away from their suffering.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve always loved animals. Ever since I was a child I was running around with some sort of animal with me. My cousin had a ferret and it was in most of our family photos in my arms for years. I was a cat for halloween most years. I loved all animals so it was only natural that I headed down the path of rescue. I grew up in CT and moved to NYC In 2011 not knowing the absolute over population problem that was going. I started to see on social media the problems and knew I wanted to help. Once I got a taste and realized the huge difference I could make I never turned back.
PuppyKittyNYCity is an animal rescue organization with a focus on street rescue, complex medical cases, and rehabilitating homeless cats. Our mission is to never say no to an animal in need, which included not only cats but dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and we even take in retired research animals. Our biggest rescue is a 70lb Pitbull and our smallest are two white retired research rats.
Street Rescue
In New York City, the escalating number of cats roaming the streets has reached crisis levels, compelling urgent rescue efforts. Street cats face numerous dangers, including traffic hazards, diseases, starvation, and harsh weather conditions. Moreover, unsterilized cats contribute to overpopulation, leading to more strays and overcrowded shelters. By rescuing cats from the streets, we not only save individual lives but also mitigate the strain on the city shelters resources. Through adoption, spaying, and neutering programs, we can curb the population growth and provide loving homes for these vulnerable animals, fostering a safer and more compassionate community for both humans and felines alike.
Complex Medical Cases
Many of the animals we rescue arrive with a myriad of health challenges, ranging from injuries sustained in accidents to chronic illnesses left untreated. At PuppyKittyNYCity, we believe that every life is worth saving, regardless of the obstacles it may face. Our skilled veterinarians and caregivers work tirelessly to provide comprehensive medical care, surgeries, and rehabilitation to these special cases. Through a combination of cutting-edge treatments and unwavering dedication, we strive to give each animal a fighting chance for a brighter future.
Impact and Vison
Since our inception PuppyKittyNYCity has touched the lives of countless animals. In 2023 our mission stood firm on the principle of never saying no to an animal in need. Through unwavering dedication and tireless efforts, we proudly saved over 900 animals providing them with the love, care, and second chances they deserve. Each rescue represents a story of hope and compassion, reminding us that together we can make a profound difference in the lives of those who cannot speak for themselves.
Recent Hoarding Case
On January 24th we rescued 34 cats from an apartment in Jamaica Ave, in Woodhaven, Queens. One unfortunately was too sick to be saved. Two cats, Legend, and Hero, needed specialty surgery at VERG, a veterinary hospital in Brooklyn. They both had genetic deformities. Poor Legend had deformed rear legs and needed a double amputation. Hero needed surgery on both of his knees, These surgeries were 1000s of dollars. Thankfully everyone is doing pretty well now!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the most important qualities I’ve developed over the years is emotional resilience. Rescue work is incredibly tough, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the emotional weight of seeing animals in pain or suffering. The ability to stay focused, make critical decisions, and provide the best care possible while navigating those emotions is key. It’s heart-wrenching at times, but knowing that my role in the rescue process can mean the difference between life and death keeps me grounded and determined.
Secondly, my background as a veterinary technician has been a huge asset. I originally went to school to become a vet tech, and those skills have been invaluable. Whether it’s recognizing health issues, administering treatments, or handling medical emergencies, having that technical knowledge allows me to make informed decisions quickly. It’s also helped me communicate more effectively with vets and manage the medical side of running PuppyKittyNYCity, which is so crucial to what we do.
Lastly, a deep, genuine love for animals is what drives everything. Running a rescue isn’t something you do for financial gain or recognition—it’s truly a labor of love. Knowing animals inside and out, understanding their needs, their behaviors, and having that unwavering compassion for them is essential. This work demands more than just skills; it requires heart. Every animal we save is a reminder of why we do this.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
At PuppyKittyNYCity, we’re always looking to collaborate with passionate individuals who share our love for animals and want to make a real difference. Whether you’re a veterinarian, vet tech, pet sitter, or just an animal lover with skills and talents you’re willing to contribute, there’s a place for you in our mission. Every person brings something unique to the table, and together we can do more to help the cats that need us.
