Hi Mecca, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Success to me is making sure that I am able to be genuine to myself at all times, being able to provide for my family, and giving back to my community. Being effective in my business is making sure that I am always providing my company’s services, at a consistent rate, and providing services that exceed my clients’ expectations. I own a boutique entertainment company based in Los Angeles, CA. My services include: hosting events, management, and booking talent for my clients within the entertainment industry. Being the owner of an entertainment company, I am most of the time, the only black woman in the room. I feel a great sense f responsibility. The entertainment industry from a business perspective is very male dominated.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the owner of a Los Angeles based boutique entertainment company named 5 Oceans Booking. My company specializes in hosting events, providing management & PR services for artists, and booking talent for special events. My company is unique because we are a boutique entertainment company, and our clients are some of the biggest stars in the world. Every year, my company gives back to my community by hosting financial literacy events to empower my community with tools to be financially successful. My company also hosts our annual Women Entrepreneur Summits. Creating networks for women in business. Please look out for more events. Also, look out for a book that I have been working on coming out very soon!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Treating others how I want to be treated is one of my number one rules that I live by. Whether I am conducting business with one of the biggest stars in the world and their team, or simply speaking to someone’s assistant who is getting a celebrity’s trailer/ rider together, I treat everyone with kindness and respect. Never giving up and being resilient is another life rule that I live by. I have been told NO so many times. However, my resiliency has kept me in business successfully for over ten years. And lastly, never stop learning. The entertainment industry is constantly changing! It is ver important that I continuously learn my business so that I can be more effective and efficient.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
MY MOTHER! I have to give my Mother this honor. She has been the most helpful, the most consistent, and just the saving grace that has always been by my side. Being an entrepreneur is tough. There is no set schedule. There is no guarantee that business will be profitable. Having my Mother by my side every step of the way has given me the strength to never give up. She was the first entrepreneur I have ever known. MY SON! My son has given me the will and the determination to never give up. I always look to my son as my motivation because he is the reason I work so hard. I work so hard to provide him a life of happiness. My Mother and my son are my biggest inspirations, and the reason why I keep going.
