We were lucky to catch up with Meche Trejo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Meche , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
The number one way I keep creativity alive is being in tune with my emotions. One thing I’ve learned about being an artist you have to be honest with yourself and very up front about your emotions to make good music. Being an artist isn’t just singing a song, it’s giving people your personal journal of thoughts and feelings. Being an artist is a lifestyle. I always try to stay inspired by watching my favorite movies, listening to my favorites records, and just listening to new music.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a singer-songwriter. I’ve been doing music seriously for two years now. I do RnB, Indie, kind of everything. I have one album out right now ” veintidos” and single called “like you”. I’ve been working on a current album for a while now. When it comes to process of writing I never try to push myself too much I want it to be organic. This next album has been in the works for a minute now. I’ve also been working on other projects in a different genre of music than most people are use to me doing. I’ve been working on some tejano music which is a very small lane of music. My family has been very well known for doing this type of music the since early 70s in the midwest. There are people actually still trying to sell my family’s albums online! They were Andy Trejo Y Sus Dynamicos. Overall making this transition in my career has been so fulfilling and amazing. I still plan on doing my regular music but just switching into that lane has opened so many doors as well as new opportunities.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One thing I think artists need to think about in order to be sucessful is understanding what success means to them. My level of what I deem to be successful, might be different from another. You have to question what you really want from music. Being an artist you have to be honest with yourself and your music. You also have to be personable, open to criticism, and be around people who are gonna push you to your fullest potential.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The number one person who has helped me and instilled confidence in me throughout my musical journey is my best friend and partner. He’s helped me understand the industry as well as pushing me forward by completely believing in me. I was never in an environment of artists, before we met he opened me to an entire new world. He showed me how to mix my own music as well as promote, and upload music as an independent artist. Having someone believe in you so much instills a different type of confidence.
