We recently connected with Mecoiya Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mecoiya, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose by traveling the road of who I am when no one is around. Finding out who that person was and going down the path of loving who she is allowed me to discover the thing that made me happy regardless of whatever else was happening in my life. For me, that thing (my purpose) is creating. When I can create, I am happier than I am at any other point of my day. Whether it’s painting, a DIY project I ran across on Pinterest, or crafting love stories on my laptop, that is my space of fulfillment and happiness.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an Urban Fiction Author, blogger, and entrepreneur. My heaviest and most fulfilling hat to wear is being an author.
I love being able to bring characters, worlds, and stories together that people are able to tap in to and enjoy. Being able to create a fictional character that another woman or man can see themselves in and learn from is the thing that keeps me writing.
I have a catalogue of twenty-seven love stories, available on Amazon, that allow people to escape their worlds and travel somewhere else through the pages of my books. I like to think that I create love stories that the every day woman can read and connect with. Even if you aren’t a hopeless romantic, I like to think that my loves stories can bring out the hopeless romantic in any one.
Currently I am rebranding and shifting from writing under the pen name ‘Queen Rae’ and I’ll start writing under ‘Meco J.’ later this year. I’m working on
a few novels under ‘Queen Rae’ and then I’ll shift to ‘Meco J’.
I’m also venturing off to expand my crafting business. I’ve recently started making baby crates. They crafts make the perfect gift for a new baby or expectant mother and making them allow me to bring different themes and visions to life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativity. Vision. Resilience. Those things have been the most impactful in my journey and have allowed me to stay the course.
Everyone’s path doesn’t look the same, so you may have to be CREATIVE in your approach. Your VISION won’t look like everyone else’s and that’s what will set you apart with your audience. RESILICNE is going to keep you going even when things don’t excel as quickly as you think they will.
My advice would be to stay focused on your reason why. My reason why is my daughter. I want her to see that anything is possible as long as you remain focused and stay grounded in your faith. I can’t stop because I don’t want to set that example for her.
I understand that not everyone has a child or someone in their life who can be their reason, so I would say to focus on the big picture and map out what you need to do to get there. Write the vision and make it plain.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was to raise me in church. I grew up in church and my parents made sure that I participated in every ministry and group that I could possibly be in.
This taught me accountability at an early age. It laid the foundation for my relationship with God and my faith. It also taught me responsibility because I had to do my part in each of the groups I was a member in.
