Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meera Sharma. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Meera, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
My go to form of self care is ensuring I start my day on a positive note – I believe how we start the day can not only impact the rest of the day ahead but it determines how effective and productive we are. That’s why I start my morning by working out in the gym – I love weight lifting; it’s helped me stay fit and build my strength, which in turn has made me feel a lot more confident. I also always ensure I have a nutritious breakfast after my workouts.
Outside of my gym workouts I’ve recently started taking yoga classes – yoga helps me relax, focus and be more present. Additionally, I do karate – karate is another great way to ensure my mind stays active and that I stay present in the moment as we have to learn numerous forms and focus.
To me self-care is also knowing my limits and when I need to stop and spend some time on my own – whether that’s meditating, going for walks, saying no to things I don’t want to do. Self-care is about doing things that feed my soul and make me happy. It’s about spending time with people who uplift me and I care about.
Overall, when I’m looking after myself I can be a more effective person in all other areas of my life. I can also be a more level headed and calm person which in turn positively impacts those around you. If you are in a good place then you’re going to exude good energy which is contagious!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I came to the limelight on ITV’s Take Me Out, which is a dating show that’s really popular in the UK, since then I’ve been using my platform to talk about identity, representation, and staying motivated! I’ve written for the likes of The Independent, as well as appearing on BBC radio, Channel 4 to name a few!
I’m a firm believer that you can achieve your goals and dreams but at the same time, I do acknowledge we can all have a down day, which is exactly when we need someone to cheer us on. I was always the friend out of my friend group that would be the go-to when people needed cheering up, or some motivation, and that inspired me to publish The Little Book of Sass, featuring ‘sasspirational’ quotes to perk people up when they need it the most. On the back of this, I created my platform The School of Sass to educate women on the skills they need to stay motivated, positive, and live the life they’ve imagined by channeling their inner sass. I honestly just want everyone to feel good about themselves and not have any regrets!!
Further to this I’ve interviewed the likes of Maya Vander, Charithra Chandran, Diipa Khosla, Sydney Cummings as part of my radio show, The Sass Life, which aired on Rukus Avenue Radio. I have a new season which recently launched on Rukus Avenue Radio and iHeartRadio. The purpose of my show is to empower women to live their best lives and I have plenty more inspiring interviews lined up for the new season, which you can hear via iHeartRadio app, Monday’s at 9pm PST.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Mindset is really important so when I was faced with a challenge, I viewed it as an opportunity to grow and push myself out of my comfort zone. Everything that has happened has made me who I am today. It’s taught me to not listen to anyone who tells you you can’t do something, don’t take no as an answer -instead find another way to make it happen, work hard and follow your gut! The right opportunities will present themselves at the right time – rejection is redirection after all!
Being open minded and flexible is another important quality as it’s meant I’ve been happy to adapt when things perhaps didn’t go as planned. I’ve also been willing to take on opportunities that have come my way; I’ve been happy to say yes to things that perhaps where not something I had planned to do e.g. going on the UK TV show Take Me Out – rather than saying no and worrying about it I just said yes and it turned out to be the catalyst for a number of opportunities that came my way thereafter.
If you’re looking to develop or improve a skill or even one of the above the best thing to do is practice. Let’s say you are normally not one to try new things out, well the best thing to do is to make small tweaks in your day to day life. This can be something small such such as trying a new fruit! As the weeks go on you can slowly build this up into bigger things. The purpose of this is that the more you do new things, the more you will get used to it and then become more open to trying even more new things.
Overall though the best way to improve or develop is to just go for it and do it! You learn things as you do them and the more you do them the more comfortable and confident you become.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I find when I’m not focusing on my self-care then I can get overwhelmed by tasks, which is why practicing regular self-care is important.
Let’s take the example of being overwhelmed when you have a lot of work to do. In this situation I find writing things down really helps. I would recommend writing down all the things you have to do. Then highlighting the tasks that are perhaps more urgent. You can then make your way through the tasks and cross them out as you go. The good thing about writing things down is it puts things in perspective. You may feel like you have a lot to do but when it’s on paper in front of you, you’ll often be able to see that it’s not as much as you thought. When you tick off the items as you do them it will also allow you to see that you’re getting through your to do list and you will feel better for it.
Another thing I do when I feel overwhelmed is to go for a walk. Not only will the fresh air do you some good, but it will allow you to remove yourself from the situation that’s making you feel overwhelmed. When you get back you will likely feel refreshed and be more willing to work on the to do list that you have.
