We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meg Mcsweeney a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
From a young age I developed close relationships with others and I was very lucky to be exposed to people who lead with compassion which allowed me to learn a way of communicating and connecting with others that feels really good. I’ve always been curious about new experiences and people, so I think as I got older I was able to develop a stronger sense of empathy as I also learned the importance of listening actively and reflecting on my own emotions to better connect with others. In my coaching this shows up frequently with clients who really just need to be seen, heard and have their own experiences validated to be able to grow!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
After making a big life change and moving across the country, I officially launched my own online coaching business that I’ve named innerblüm. I offer virtual training sessions, remote personalized programming, and 1:1 coaching calls focusing on building habits and shifting negative mindsets. My mission is to support women to be strong and confident in their body, by taking back control of their lives through intentional actions everyday. I consider my approach to be holistic strength training – I believe that a strong body starts with your mindset and with that your confidence can grow.
For this spring season, I am running a 6-week program Grow & Glow – that kicks off March 17th. It will include a training program, daily/weekly habit focus, a habit tracker & tips for success. The goal is to help anyone who has fallen off of their routine, especially with consistent workouts by making these quick and effective (30min) and all you need are one set of dumbbells (so you can train anywhere!). I hope to offer more programs like this for anyone who isn’t ready to make a bigger investment for coaching quite yet!
I am always taking on new remote programming clients and will be reopening private or duet training time slots in April for new clients!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Service – I have been a waitress and bartender for the last 10 years. If you’ve worked in the industry, you know the level of patience, time management, and overall people skills you have to have to be good at these jobs! My time working in the chaos that is this industry has no doubt made me a significantly stronger (and just overall better) person.
Graphic Design – Fun fact, I have a BFA in Graphic Design! I still like to create art, but this part of my brain highly enjoys designing programs and I think that shows in my programming.
Spirituality – I have grown significantly in the past 4 years especially. I thank a lot of that to finding a spiritual practice, connecting with healers/therapists and all humans who have guided me to face past traumas and experiences to move through and explore new potential. This has undoubtedly helped me lead with compassion and empathy for the clients I’ve been lucky enough to have trust me in a similar way when they face challenges in their own fitness journey. I think it is all connected!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking to collaborate or partner with other people in the fitness industry! I think my brand partners especially well with yoga/meditation instructors, nutritionists and dietitians, and physical therapists. I’m always looking for people to refer to my clients for the services that are very much needed but out of my scope of practice.
