We recently connected with Meg Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meg, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is absolutely something I have struggled with as an artist. In an increasingly digital art world, this is all the more relevant, as I scroll through my social media feed of beautiful artists with fine training. All I tell myself is …. “comparison is the thief of joy”. I try to focus on my own growth as an artist instead of constantly comparing myself to others. I also remind myself why I started my art business to begin with. It was always meant to be FUN and a creative outlet. In my opinion, there are no imposters in creativity!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an outdoorsy landscape artist and wall muralist, based in Knoxville, TN. My favorite service I offer is custom landscape art. People send me a picture of their favorite place (usually a hike, lakeview, outdoorsy spot), and I paint it for them! I absolutely love the opportunity to paint the outdoors and explore the beautiful Smoky Mountains! Hike, photograph, paint, repeat is my motto. I started Meg Elaine Miller Art in 2020, so we will be celebrating our 5 year anniversary soon. I hope to bring the outdoors to family walls for many years to come.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Optimism, flexibility, and resilience. If you are starting a creative career or side hustle, I highly encourage others to start it with the goal of having fun. It’s hard to be creative when you are not having a good time! I also encourage you to allow yourself flexibility in the creative journey. I have pivoted a few times with the market or with my own interests and passions! Finally, keep at it! Just keep putting yourself out there, and the right clients will come along.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My favorite client I ever had was a woman who reached out to me on Instagram because it was her anniversary with her husband who was a landscape photographer. She sent me one of his photos of a beautiful mountain range, and she gave it to him as an anniversary present. I love to paint special places for people. I’m always trying to connect with landscape photographers for collaborations, and I love the chance to paint beautiful places, even if I haven’t personally visited them before.
