We were lucky to catch up with Megan Conner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I feel like my purpose is something I am constantly searching for – it is evolving and changing. I’m not a person who does just one thing – I want to do it all in this little life, but the main purpose above all else is to inspire others along the way and leave something meaningful behind.
I lost my stepdad at the age of 22 of liver cancer – he was who I grew up with every day as a father, and seeing him lose his life to alcoholism instilled in me we only have one shot at this life we are given. So, what am I going to do with it?
I’ve always been creative, so creating is part of my purpose. How I use that to inspire others through writing music and books or training people through fitness coaching and running – it all comes back to hoping that at the end of my day, the people I crossed paths with look back and say, “she made my life better in some small way.”
Last September I answered an email from a friend that changed my life forever. She had been on dialysis for 2 years and needed a kidney. Usually the wait time to find a kidney is between 5-10 years if they can make it that long on dialysis. She asked if I would be willing to test – heck yes!!! I went through all the tests, and the day after Christmas I was able to tell her I would be able to give her a kidney. January 16, 2025 I gave my friend Kim my left kidney and it forever changed my life and hers.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As I mentioned before – I kind of do it all! I’ve always been a writer and creator. For years I made my living as a songwriter, but it’s a tough business and hard to make a decent full time living without sacrificing both mental and physical space.
I’ve written songs for Rascal Flatts, Chris Young, Craig Morgan, Kylie Morgan, Danny Gokey and more, but to supplement financially and emotionally I’ve always been in the fitness business. To me, music and fitness are the perfect marriage. I currently train people remotely while traveling in my RV for the summer. I call it The Wandering Workout! Wherever I travel, I do a free workout and blog about the journey, places to eat and I coach my clients virtually. Covid helped us all realize you don’t need a gym to continue a workout regimen. You need yourself, a willing heart, and someone who will get to know you on a personal level to provide the best workouts for you, your lifestyle and your goals. Along with personal training and workouts, my heart really beats for helping people reach their running goals through run coaching. I recently released a book on Amazon called “I Am Not a Runner…Or Am I” detailing my journey as a non-athlete growing up to a now Boston marathoner and coach.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The people along the way have been most impactful to my journey. Whether it has been learning from people better than me, or the support of everyone throughout the kidney donation, I wouldn’t have the life I do without the people IN my life. Here is my advice:
-Don’t listen to the people who say you’re not good enough. Prove them wrong.
-Find and hold onto the people you can learn from.
-Find and hold onto the GOOD hearts along the way.
-Relationships are key. Take time to get to know your mentors and people you work for on a personal level.
-Learn how to save and invest your money and time.
-Be kind. That will get you further than anything.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with! Right now I’m so interested in building the Wandering Workout brand and want to connect with fellow fit friends in cool spots to share a wandering workout. I’d love to connect with people who would be willing to share their favorite place to workout, run, sweat, recover and their favorite places to go, eat and explore.
