Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Duncanson . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Megan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
As an artist I find purpose in creating colorful, joyful art that I hope inspires people to live their best lives. I don’t like to create anything dark or with a deep, hidden meaning that people have to search for, but rather to create art that makes people feel good just by looking at it. Having this purpose gives me motivation and drive to create more art and always strive to create in such a way that makes me happy as well as viewers of my artwork.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m currently traveling around the Southwestern United States in my self converted campervan. I left Florida (Miami), after having lived there for most of the last 30 years. I was feeling wanderlust for something new, something different. I’ve always had the need to mix things up, for constant change. I’ve been a full-time van life artist for over 2 years now, working out of my tiny home/art studio on wheels creating travel art and my Doodle Gears collection inspired by my love of cycling.
I travel to National Parks and other places with amazing scenery and places to ride my bike, all of which inspires me to create fun, colorful art. I am currently working on my Doodle Gears collection, featuring gears of all shapes and sizes with a PoP Art spin on it with gears painted as smiley faces, flowers and more. Art that anyone would enjoy, particularly cyclists, watch aficionados and car enthusiasts. All the while moving to a new place every 1-2 weeks to immerse myself in new landscapes and a place to ride my bike.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Passion: the number one reason for any success, or realization of a goal or dream has always been to be passionate about it. Whether it’s my art or cycling – passion has always driven me, a love for what I do is the force behind any success I’ve achieved in my life.
Consistency: Being dedicated to having a consistent work ethic is key to having the most impact in my art business. I know whenever I am not as consistent with my art business it tends to falter a little bit and I have to get back on track.
Practice: As an artist (and cyclist/athlete) practice, practice, practice truly is the key to achieving the best results. The more we do something over and over, the better we get at it.
The one thing I would say to anyone looking to improve on these three pillars, is to always keep them in mind and never lose sight of their importance. They work hand in hand to lead to a success in life and any chosen career path.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would LOVE to collaborate with any brands that are in the “gear” related industry. Such as cycling brands, luxury watch makers and car manufacturers and any company that loves colorful, gear inspired art. I have my Doodle Gears collection of artwork on my website meganaroon.com and can be reached through my site, or at meganaroon@gmail.com.
My goal over the next couple of years is to become known as the Doodle Gear Artist! And collaborating with other brands to highlight them through bold, colorful pop art is my top goal, priority.
