We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Hylton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Megan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Purpose evolves as we journey through life. I discovered my purpose over time, through various experiences and challenges. I always had a desire to help people and started out my professional career as a teacher at the Junior High Level. Over time I realized that persons of various ages would find it easy to speak with me about deep rooted issues and my desire to study psychology grew, I completed studies in Counselling Psychology and served as a Guidance Counsellor at the primary school level for six years. My battle with barrenness for 10 years and eventually being blessed with three children, created within me a passion for parenting and my first book “Directing Your Arrows: A Strategic Approach to Successful Parenting was written and published while serving as Guidance Counsellor. That book opened multiple opportunities for me to interact with and serve parents and children. As the Covid-19 Pandemic began I had a greater desire to help people through counselling and coaching. Stepping out in this manner was not celebrated at my place of work; it created enemies for me and deliberate efforts were made to undermine my impact and tear down my self-image. Instead of killing my drive it propelled me forward into pushing and growing my practice and impacting more lives positively. Today I am living a fulfilled life- counselling and mentoring parents, children, teens and couples and writing more material to empower people to live life intentionally.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Megan Hylton, a licensed Associate Counselling Psychologist who offers online and face-to-face therapy to children, teens and adults as well as pre-marital and marriage therapy. As a certified Wired to Win DNA Coach and Founder of Oasis Counselling & Coaching Services I also create mentorship programmes that cater to the needs of specific groups within families eg. Parents, Teens and Couples and use my skills of therapy and coaching to provide a balanced approach towards desired change. Books are written to empower these different groups. Online presentations, webinars and workshops are planned and executed based on need and requests or demands.
What makes my business and impact stand out is that i was medically barren and told by doctors that I would never have children, After 10 years of waiting and believing God blessed me with 3 daughters and now I serve families as a counsellor, parenting coach, teen coach and along with my husband as a marriage mentor. My past struggles have given me an additional zeal to empower parents, couples and children family success.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities or skills that have been most impactful on my journey are teachability/willingness to learn, tenacity, and my relational skills.
If you are just starting out understand that you do not know all that there is to know in your field or industry. Maintain an attitude of humility that allows you to be willing to be mentored, taught and corrected, That teachable attitude will make it easy for you to be guided by one who is ahead of you in the game without you feeling like an imposter or inferior. Being teachable positions you for growth. Read books wriitten by experts in your field and by successful entrepreneurs. Follow their platforms, read their blogs, Learn and grow,
Tenacity is a necessary quality for any budding entrepreneur. There will be obstacles but you must believe enough in your product or service and what you have to offer that you never give up even in the face of adversity and opposition. Where there is no way-we make a way.
Relational skills can be learned even if it’s not natural for you. Every business man or woman must interact with people. Knowing how to connect and relate to people is paramount if you really want to succeed. Be intentional about reading books and strengthening your skills in this area.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Apart from God my heavenly father, I’d have to name two persons here: 1: My husband of 24 years and best friend and life partner Winston Hylton- who understands the meaning of partnership and covenant and has always been there believing, supporting and cheering me on-even in the most difficult times.
2. My pastor, mentor, coach and spiritual father Apostle Courtney McLean- over the last 6 years he has taught me innumerable lessons on being successful and living a purposeful life; about being disciplined and focused in pursuit of clearly stated goals. He is always willing to guide correct and teach and uses his own experiences to empower his mentees for the win, I thank God for these two influencers in my life.
