We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Megan Morris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Megan below.
Hi Megan, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Growing up I watched my parents work REALLY hard for everything we had. I always looked up to my mom and admired how professional she sounded when she would take work calls at home. Fast forward to my early teens I started working earlier than most people my age. I absolutely LOVED it! It was so rewarding to help contribute to the extra things I wanted to do- and I’ve been working ever since!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Growing up, I loved to draw and as the years went on I started painting too. I remember several nights of going into my mom’s bathroom and taking her makeup to put on the faces I drew- using the makeup as my paint. (wow that is full circle) Fast forward to freshman year of high school, I was in an art class with some upperclassmen who wanted me to do their makeup for prom. I was shocked- because I honestly didn’t think much of how I did my makeup. Honored, I did it and my life changed after that day! Opportunities continued to arise until I realized this is what I was meant to do. I quickly fell in love with the wedding industry- there is nothing quite like being part of one of the most special days in someone’s life. I started my company after being in the beauty industry for 5-6 years. Southern Tease Luxury Hair & Makeup is now 7 years old and has serviced over 1200 bridal parties! Along with our weddings, I am very passionate about educating future artists as well. We have all kinds of exciting things coming up- hope you stay tuned for the ride!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Originality + Integrity – Since I had been in the industry for several years before starting my own company, I wanted to make sure I was creating my OWN brand. I didn’t want to just copy and paste what I had seen to be successful, I wanted my brand to represent me, my values, and everything I had worked really hard for in the years prior. I think it’s crucial to be passionate in entrepreneurship or you’ll get burned out. So creating your own unique space is important to not only stand out, but to give you the drive to keep going!
2. Stay focused on what you are doing, not those around you – Like I said, there is more than enough business for everyone! Put your head back down and focus on you and your brand. I have always done the most growth when I was staying in my lane and not looking around at what everyone else was doing!
3. Honesty – It goes a long way to be honest and that is absolutely something to build your business upon!
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Biblical Laws of Success. Every page in this book has something you can take away and use to enrich your life! I won’t give away too much, but one of my favorite lessons in the book is about reaping what you sow. It is SO good!
