Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Rowe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Megan, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?
Growing up in Hershey, Pennsylvania, (yes! Like the chocolate) I was fortunate to have a role model who embodied community and compassion. Milton Hershey, the town’s founder, made selfless decisions throughout his life to ensure generational wealth for his workers, provide them with entertainment to improve their quality of life, and strategically set up a $17 billion endowment that continues to provide free education and housing to low-income families.
This emphasis on community and shared prosperity was ingrained in the town’s culture. Truthfully and naively, it was the only way I had known people to function in a business ecosystem – It was a bit of a culture shock when I later learned about companies that prioritize profits over people. Inspired by Milton Hershey’s legacy and the ability to build a business that supports the community and gives back, that’s what I try to do with checkwhatsgood.com.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We’re building a website, that feels like an app to help people discover and experience the best of their local communities. Our AI technology relieves the burden of manually finding events and puts them all in one – from free stand-up on a Wednesday at your favorite brewery to upcoming festivals. We capture small to medium sized events that are often overlooked, but are just as worthy. We’re excited about connecting people with unique businesses and events, and creating a vibrant, visual, easy-to-use digital hub for local exploration.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe the three most impactful qualities in our journey have been vulnerability, creativity, and empathy. Embracing vulnerability and being open to constructive criticism has allowed me to learn from my mistakes and grow as a professional. Creativity has been instrumental in overcoming challenges and finding innovative solutions. Finally, empathy has enabled us to understand our users’ needs and build a product that truly meets their requirements.
These are easier to embrace when you have mentors that you trust and are championing for you! They’ll allow you to be honest about where you’re at without making you feel bad. I highly recommend finding people that help create this space for you.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We’re actively seeking partnerships with tourism boards, destination management organizations, and local governments to create a more vibrant and accessible tourism ecosystem. Our platform offers a unique opportunity to increase tourism revenue, improve visitor experiences, and enhance local economic development by providing a centralized hub for businesses and events. We’re interested in exploring various partnership models.
