Meet Megan Tisler

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Tisler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Megan, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I find my purpose, first of by the grace of God; followed by my family and all of my beloved pigs! They really are the reason that I get up everyday. The pigs are so intelligent, compassionate, loving and so smart. They are as smart as 3 years old children so they are always keeping me on my toes and making me laugh. When I am having a bad day I go sit with the pigs and they can feel my emotions, they want love and all of my troubles just fade away.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
This all started with me wanting a small dog, my husband said NO! He said” Why dont you just get a mini pig or something?” So. I did. That is how this all starteded. We got Tonk, our oldest pig and then a few months later we, were so in love with him that we wanted more.

He and I talked and decided that we wanted to breed them, soley because we loved them so much! We went into this with the understand that if and when we breed, we would only breed the sows once a year and if the babies didnt sell we would keep them and stop breeding. We still stand by everyday of our lives. We also have a contract that if for any reason you can not keep your pig then they will be returned to us no questions asked. We love our babies!

Charolette, is my American Mini Pig Association Therapy Pig, she knows over 60 diffrent conmmands. She travels to schools, nursing homes, colleges and any place she is invited.

We love pigs so much that we opend a nonprofit for the rescue of unwanted pigs, Tank’s Mini Pig Rescue.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Find a mentor, someone that has been doing this for a lot longer than you. learn all you can from them. Never stop learning, I am always reading and learning.

Secondly, find away to anticipate the unexpected. Murphy, loves to hang out. I say this jokingly but, with truth behind it. Do you teach or show your pigs anything you do not want them to remember and learn. Never reinforce bad behavior only positive behavior.

Thirdly, find an amazing mini pig vet! You will need him/her through out your journey. Not just any old vet some one that truly knows how to work with mini pigs.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I talk, what I mean it I talk it out. Starting with why it went wrong or is going wrong. I think pray about it, then make a plan to correct was is causing me grief. I always go to my mentor and talk with her about it and see what she has to say.
