We recently connected with Megg Jacobs and have shared our conversation below.
Megg, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I haven’t always been confident, in fact for most of my life I’ve been a shy and self-conscious person. I have pretty severe anxiety, and part of that manifests with a fear that everyone is looking at and judging me, especially when I’m trying something new. Through mind set shifts, medication, meditation, and a lot of practice I have been able to develop a true sense of self worth and confidence. I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, and when I succeeded I was able to use that experience and say “hey, I did it once, I can do it again”.
I think we all have reservations about showing up and taking up space, but we can only become comfortable with those things by practicing them and overcoming some of that fear.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a vocalist focused on the metalcore genre. My background is in classical musical training, but my heart has always been in more extreme music genres, so when presented with the opportunity to learn more extreme vocal techniques, I jumped.
I’ve been training in this style for nearly two years now, and am starting to advance into even more extreme techniques to create the sound I want.
My goal is to create a space to explore the girly, gross, and campy side of metal. I want to combine the energy of live metal and hardcore shows with the extravagance and femininity of a pop show. My experience is all about contradictions, and I want to showcase how those contradictions can live and thrive together.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity, perseverance, and humility.
Curiosity is at the root of everything I do. I want to experience new things, learn more, and ask questions. If you don’t remain curious, you get stagnent, and that’s not how I want to experience my career. Pushing those boundaries and learning is the only way to find out who you are and what you want. It’s so important to remain curious.
In terms of perseverance, it’s important to remember that in the music industry, you’re going to be told “no” much more than you’ll be told “yes”. If the worth of your craft and creativity is dependent on the praise of others, you’ll be facing a hard battle. Having an inner sense of worth and desire to continue to persevere regardless of outside opinions is vital for any artistic field. Success is not found overnight, you’ll need to try to find that break over and over again.
I also think that humility is huge. It’s important to remember that no one knows everything. We all have questions and things we’re trying to learn. Learning from others and being humble within your space is how you grow and build lifelong connections. A rising tide lifts all ships, so supporting your community is the only way to ensure the continued success of that community.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for artists to collaborate with! Producers, musicians, visual artists etc. I’m open for guest vocal features and contributing on top lines as well.
