We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meghan Kohler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meghan , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I love this question because I think a lot of us tend to have such a constricted view of what it means to find, or to have, a “purpose”. At different times in my life I felt like I had lost my purpose or was confused about what my purpose was. In those times I would feel stuck and not know how to move forward or I would feel like I was inadequate because I didn’t think I was contributing to anything. But over the years I started to recognize that I haven’t had just one purpose, and not every purpose I did have felt profound or far-reaching. For me, there have been times when my purpose was to go to school, or to work hard at a specific job. There have been times when my purpose was to focus on my spirituality, or to work on building or strengthening a relationship, or taking care of a loved one.
Sometimes my purpose is to create, or to heal, or to learn, or even to rest. I do believe that as a human I have the ultimate purpose of learning, experiencing, and helping others to the best of my ability, but how I practice that and what it looks like changes. Sometimes, my purpose is just to do the task in front of me, whether it’s cooking a meal, fixing a leaky faucet, or being present with a client, family member, or friend.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have worked in the mental health field for 17 years. I enjoy working with people who are interested in growing, healing, and walking more authentically in their lives. I believe that for true healing and growth to occur we need to engage all the parts of ourselves including our cognitive, emotional, physical, spiritual, and social worlds. Because of this, I incorporate a variety of approaches when working with people such as visualization, somatic practices, mindfulness techniques, and challenging thought patterns and core beliefs that no longer serve them.
I have a strong interest in mindfulness. I have been practicing mindfulness and meditation for 20 years and wrote a literature review on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. I have taken a variety of classes and trainings on mindfulness. I have seen personally and professionally how practicing mindfulness and mindfulness based strategies can create powerful change and increase overall well-being.
I still work full time at a local clinic and am growing my business. I currently offer regular therapy sessions and therapy intensives, which are longer therapy sessions that lean heavily on EMDR and somatic practices for healing from trauma. I am in the process of starting to offer classes and retreats on mindfulness and other topics. I am also working on getting started with blogging and creating short videos on instagram and facebook to offer tips and support for those looking to change, grow, heal, or just increase their overall well-being. I can’t wait to be able to reach more people and contribute to their healing journey!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three key factors that have significantly impacted my journey are: presence, following my interests, and building community. Staying present, truly engaging in the moment, helped me to focus on the opportunities and challenges right in front of me, instead of getting lost in distractions or overthinking the future. It also led to better outcomes and more fulfilling work. Following my interests led me to discover my passions and align my work with what genuinely excites me, making every step feel more meaningful. And perhaps most importantly, building community—surrounding myself with people who I could learn from and who supported my growth—provided the encouragement and collaboration necessary to keep going and keep improving. For someone just starting their journey, my advice is: be where you are, lean into what excites you, and make sure to build connections along the way. I think these three things can help us to be true to ourselves. And when we are true to ourselves, what we have to offer is so much more valuable.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents divorced when I was 10 years old, but despite this they have both always made it abundantly clear that they love me unconditionally, no matter what. From the smallest accomplishments to the biggest decisions in life, they’ve shown unwavering support, even when they don’t fully agree with my choices. They never tried to push me toward their own ideals. Instead, they trust me to follow my own path. It’s reassuring to know that even in moments of disagreement, their love remains constant, and they always have my back. Their support has given me the confidence to pursue what matters to me, knowing they’re there for me, no matter what.
