Meet Meghan McMurphy

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meghan McMurphy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Meghan, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
When I met my now co-worker and boss, Alessia, she often would talk to me about going out on my own. I was frightened of the world beyond what I could picture in my own mind. I had been scared of taking a risk my entire life, I never felt adequate enough to pursue anything outside of my comfort zone. Alessia has been a source of consistent reassurance, she lifted my spirits and made me believe there was a reason to take risks, that the opportunities outside the mundane were worth going for. In a short time, we came up with the idea to start our business and with her encouragement, I took the plunge. Support and generosity from my peers is the reason I’m able to keep believing in the risk I took.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The business I joined into is called Alessia Capelli. The team I joined was already made up of amazing and creative stylists, I was so excited to join a group of such talent. When we opened the spa, I was excited to bring some of my own passions to the table. I have been a licensed esthetician for 6 years now, and I’ve specialized in laser aesthetics for five of those years. What gets me most excited about what I do is watching people grow more confident, whether it’s with their skin, their body hair, or just lifting their spirits. My goal as an esthetician was always to create a space where people feel safe, comfortable, listened to, and confident in themselves. I know that my career can sometimes be perceived as vanity or not important, but once you actually get down to the core of it, my career is making people feel comfortable in their own body or in their own skin. I never want people to believe that that is an unattainable goal.

Alessia Capelli was a place that I could invest in the best laser hair removal device and best skin care I could find. I am so happy to finally be in a position to have both to bring to my guests!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Over the course of 6 years, there’s many little things I’ve picked up knowledge wise as an esthetician. The most important, however, have pretty much always remained the same. Confidence, continued education, and persistence were the most important in my journey. Of course, I’m always still working in these areas; keeping an open mind and rolling with the punches were also equally important. My advice to anyone early on in their career is to never stop learning, never stop seeking advice, and never stop believing in yourself. When in doubt, reach out to those closest to you for support. Surround yourself with consistent people who will keep you in the right headspace to help you achieve where you’d like to be.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The biggest area of growth these past 12 months for me has been leaving my comfort zone behind and keeping consistent. Starting a spa business from the ground is a scary process, but with the help of consistency I really do believe that the business will be able to reach amazing lengths. I am so grateful to be surrounded by team members who believe in the vision and work hard every day to help me achieve it. I would not be here without them.
