We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MEHNAZ KHAN a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi MEHNAZ , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose in life, which has now become my profession, is to change the way people perceive and utilize colors in their surroundings. My personal journey led me to the realization that colors serve more than just an aesthetic purpose—they embody a survival mechanism. By being conscious of how we employ colors in our environments, we can create spaces that nurture and nourish our mental and emotional well-being.
I once found myself grappling with depression, a condition that shattered every aspect of my life. It affected my mental health, strained my marriage, and made providing for my children a daunting task. Eventually, I reached a point where I was prescribed antidepressants, but unfortunately, they exacerbated my struggles rather than alleviating them. Determined to find a solution, I embarked on a quest for answers, scouring every resource available.
During this search, I stumbled upon a profound realization: our surroundings—where we spend our days and nights—profoundly influence how we navigate the world, with color being the most significant element. Delving into the realm of color psychology opened my eyes to its profound impact on human emotion and well-being. This discovery proved transformative for both myself and my family.
Subsequently, I made the decision to transition from my career in computer science to pursue my newfound purpose: empowering others to harness the true power of colors for their benefit. It is a journey that I am deeply passionate about, as it allows me to share the natural wonders of color with as many people as possible
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
When it comes to interior decorating, the perception is often limited to merely arranging a few furnishings and selecting materials for aesthetic appeal. I challenge this status quo—what good is a beautiful space if it does nothing for one’s well-being? For me, it’s not just about making a space look pretty; it’s about creating environments that evoke emotions, tell the story of the people who live there, and craft a space that reflects their personalities as if it has been collected over time.
Nothing is more disappointing than a room that feels like it came straight from a big-box store and does not reflect the homeowners’ unique style.
By building such intentional spaces, I have the opportunity to transform people’s lives for the better, and that’s what makes my passion and purpose so special.
In addition to my in-person services, I also offer comprehensive virtual design consultations for clients worldwide – so there is no excuse to not being surrounding yourself with colors intentionally and benefit from the true power of
reflected light’ aka color
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It’s a simple fact: success lies in the uncomfortable zone. Whether big or small, you have to take uncomfortable action to climb the next step. Now that I’ve experienced it, I say if the action you’re about to take doesn’t make your stomach churn, it’s not even worth it. It has to be scary, and that’s what yields success and unimaginable satisfaction. So, get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Whether you’re running a business or interacting with people from various walks of life, challenges are inevitable. What has helped me overcome significant challenges and develop essential skills to navigate the diverse range of human experiences on this planet is, without a doubt, motherhood.
As cliché as it may sound, it’s the reality. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without raising my three children. Every day, I’m aware that three sets of eyes are watching my every move. I fall, and I pick myself up again, because if I don’t, they’ll learn the same. That’s not the lesson I want to impart—I want them to learn resilience and perseverance.
Each of my children has a unique personality, requiring me to adapt my parenting style, strategy, and communication to each one. This experience has taught me to be flexible and understand others’ perspectives and ways of doing things.
My journey through motherhood has been a source of invaluable life lessons, shaping me into the resilient woman I am today.
