Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mehrnoush Moslemi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mehrnoush, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
In my adolescence I was quiet, shy & usually stayed to myself but once I branched out into the retail environment that all went away. I began working at MAC Cosmetics in 2014 and later on becoming a part of management. Being a part of management, I learned how to communicate with my team. Whether it was about an upcoming event or what we could do better as a team. In 2019 I stepped into a new career as a makeup instructor. Teaching has had the most effect on my ability to communicate effectively. With teaching you have to be able to meet each individuals needs while being able to communicate to a class as a whole. With proper communication comes patience and knowing how to respond correctly. Think before you speak is my motto.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I migrated to the US with my family in 1998 from Iran. When we migrated we weren’t able to take much of our belonging with us but I remember as a little girl looking at artwork my family had created. Whether it was painting from my aunts, drawing from my mother or the rug work my dad did. Seeing all of these beautiful creations made my imagination soar and that is when I discovered my love for artistry through the medium of drawing and painting. I followed this passion throughout my life & college but in my culture art isn’t a acceptable way to start a career. This caused me to go into the field of medicine. I was able to finish & got a bachelors but I was miserable thinking about spending many more years in college with a career I didn’t care for. During my time in college I got a part time job at MAC cosmetics and here is where my makeup career began. In 2019 I left Mac cosmetics and ventured into the world of teaching. I absolutely love my career as a makeup instructor because I am able to mentor talented artist and guide them into the start of their careers.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities I have that has had a large impact on my career are patience, ambition & determination. Patience is the key factor in becoming a successful teacher. Not everyone will be able to learn what you taught right away so you have to be able to adapt to each person specific needs while making sure the goal of the overall class is an achieved. Ambition and determination, go hand-in-hand, because with ambition, you have to be able to put yourself out there and try some thing that you might be afraid to do. That’s where determination comes in and helps you go one step further. These three qualities have helped me tremendously in my career, because if I had not stepped out of the norm of my culture, then I would not be the make up artist that I am today. Although it was scary, I faced and beat all of the odds, and I couldn’t be happier..
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I pride myself on being a well rounded artist & being able to do any style of makeup. I have done numerous weddings, fitness competitions, and any other glam look that you can think of, but I would love to collaborate with photographers or even designers. This would help me create more content, expand my portfolio, as well as Network with other creative individuals.
