Meet Mei Krusenklaus

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mei Krusenklaus a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mei, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Being in the photography business / creative business can be rewarding, but it is also easy to always compete or compare yourself to others. When I started Mei Krusenklaus Photography, everyone with a camera was starting to do the same thing and I always found myself comparing to other people’s work. I couldn’t understand how some people were booking clients and it made me doubt myself to question if I ever would get to that point. But then I realized everyone was on their journey. Some take longer than others. I also think growing your craft and learning new ways to improve is a big part of growing your confidence in whatever it is that you are doing. I have grown more confident in my journey because I decided to take the time to learn and grow, and with that, your business will grow too.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Mei Krusenklaus Photography started when I was pretty young. I was 22 years old. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it. I have a passion for photographing people as well as landscapes. All I knew was that I loved taking pictures. I loved cameras and learning about them. I am a pretty shy person in general and taking pictures of people helped me grow out of my shell and start talking to and getting to know more people in my area. I have met some amazing people and I am so thankful for that. Mei Krusenklaus Photography is also expanding a branch in the business as a Media company. I have decided to name it M.K Media. It just started and will be a slow-growing process but I am very excited. But not only with the new media, I will continue to grow Mei Krusenklaus Photography. I want to continue to take pictures of seniors, weddings, lifestyle sessions, and whatever else comes along my way.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think the three skills that helped me grow in my business is one to be motivated. I know that doesn’t seem like a skill, but motivation will get you pretty far in life. No one is going to believe in you as much as yourself and want you to succeed as much as yourself, and you need motivation to be able to push through the times you feel like you want to quit. The second skill is to be patient. Some people do, but I think most people don’t get all the clients and sales they want overnight. You have to put in the work be patient with yourself and continue to grow at the speed that is right for you. I also think being it will help you not overthink and continue to make the right choices. The third skill is just to continue to learn about your craft and new ways to innovate your company. If you’re willing to continue to learn then your business will only get better and better.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I always think of Mel Robbin’s advice on feelings and thoughts. She says you can’t control the way you feel, but you can control the way you think and what you do with that. So for example, I can’t control when I get anxious about having to edit dozens of pictures in a few short weeks, but I can control what I do. So, sitting at my desk feeling anxious isn’t going to help me through my emotions, but if I continue to push through I will end up feeling much better on the other side. I think that also just goes with life. No matter what you do, at some point, you are going to feel overwhelmed, but the question is so what’s next? I always like to say sure I am feeling anxious but what can I do to make that go away? Sitting and thinking about it for hours isn’t going to help me. I need to figure out what are the steps to get on the other side. I do think you need to process your feelings, but I think figuring out what the steps are to make those feelings better is what will help.
