Meet Mel Kay

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mel Kay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mel , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Immigrating from a different country has been a challenge & culture shock is real. I find that the thing that helps me most is finding the areas of similarities instead of focusing on the differences that divide us. We are all human after all & in that there is comfort.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a professionally trained singer & I write music, teach voice & create shows. I can say getting clear on my purpose has been monumental in helping me walk out my goals more effectively. My aim through all avenues of music has been to support the underdog & to give voice to the voiceless. Whether it’s helping to create opportunities for artists like myself, to help people find their voices with vocal training or create music to make people feel less alone my goal is to lift people up.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My training in voice at WAAPA was life changing & gave me the technical ability I have today to bring a song from thought into reality.

The work ethic I was taught throughout many areas of my life has greatly helped me to keep going through rough patches.

& the importance of finding a internal peace that surpasses understanding through my faith has in turn been hugely helpful in me being able to do what I do.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents allowed me to follow my dreams fully. They supported me and believed in me. I was allowed to be myself & that was hugely impactful.
