Meet Mel Soul

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mel Soul a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mel, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Life has shown me that trials can be turned into art. The best art I’m able to create comes from writing songs.

I’ve learned from one of my songwriting idols, Mary Gauthier, that once you put your trauma in a song it doesn’t become your story anymore. It just becomes a story.

To me, that’s the ultimate way to release pain.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve been a singer for 16 years and a songwriter for 11 of those years.

My passion in life is my music. I perform solo and with my band, Mel Soul And The Heartbeat.

As a musician in the local Utah music scene, it’s been a wild journey starting over my career many times. But with all the hard work, it’s been worth all the challenges.

I plan on performing Sept 7th before the weekend of the Park City Song Summit organized by Montain Town Music.

My band will be performing for the Utah State Fair Sept 16th, and the Escalante Canyons Arts Festival Sept 23rd!

More details will be updated for those events on my Facebook page: Mel Soul.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities I possess that have helped my music career include determination, honesty and compassion.

I’m determined to use all of the skills I’ve learned from music industry giants to create the best experience for my audience during every show.

I’m honest about my experiences, good or bad, and put those stories in my songs.

I’m compassionate to everyone I work with, everyone that is a fan, and everyone that supports me.

My advice to anyone who wants to start or continue their music career would be to always do what you’re doing from the heart. Remember why you love music and always know music will never give up on you.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The biggest lesson I learned this year with my mental health is that every emotion is valid and worthy.

The best strategy I have when I feel overwhelmed is to understand that every emotion I’m going through deserves to be heard.

Another strategy that goes with listening to my emotions includes listening to my body and what it needs in order to survive. I used to feel ashamed of resting because I always worry if I’m running out of time. Now I understand that rest is important for me in order to create my best work.
