Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melanie Alvarez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melanie, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
When you grow up learning how to do your own makeup because nobody else knows how to match your undertone, you also learn something bigger: how to advocate for yourself in rooms not built with you in mind.
As a first-generation Latina makeup artist and content creator, I’ve often been the only woman of color on set, in boardrooms, or at brand events. At first, I thought I had to prove I belonged by assimilating. But over time, I realized my difference wasn’t a disadvantage, it was a lens. One that allowed me to see the gaps, tell better stories, and show up for the people who needed someone who looked like them in the room.
I learned to lead by example. To build bridges between brands and real representation. And to treat every “only one” moment not as a setback but as a signal that there’s work to be done, and I’m in the right place to do it.
Now, I don’t walk into rooms trying to blend in. I walk in to make them brighter, bolder, and a little more inclusive than they were before.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a professional makeup artist and content creator based in Los Angeles, and I specialize in beauty that feels elevated but never out of reach. Whether I’m prepping talent for an event, curating content for a brand campaign, or getting a bride ready for her big day, I approach every face with intention, joy, and a little bit of glam.
What makes this journey exciting is the duality; I’m both artist and entrepreneur. In 2025, I launched Melanieisfab.com, a platform that brings everything I do into one home. I created the site as a space where beauty feels personal again and not algorithmic or intimidating. Just fun, intentional, and a little fabulous. Here you can book directly and check out my previous work.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three things have made the biggest impact on my journey: adaptability, intuition, and consistency.
Adaptability helped me pivot when the industry shifted or when trends changed overnight. Whether it was switching platforms, learning new content styles, or adjusting to different client needs, I stayed curious, not stuck. My advice? Don’t wait to be ready. Be flexible, and learn as you go.
Intuition guided me when strategy wasn’t enough. Knowing what feels right for your brand, your artistry, or your audience is a muscle worth strengthening. You build it by listening to your gut more often than your doubts.
And consistency; that’s the magic. You don’t have to go viral. You just have to keep showing up, even when the algorithm doesn’t reward you. Especially then.
Success in creative spaces isn’t just about talent & learning how to keep going. So go steady, trust yourself, and don’t be afraid to evolve out loud.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who values both aesthetics and intention. They’re not just looking for makeup or content; they’re building a brand, a moment, or a memory. Whether it’s a bride, a beauty brand, or a creative agency, the clients I connect with most are collaborative, communicative, and trust the process.
They understand that glam is more than just a look and that it’s a language. And they want to work with someone who sees the bigger picture: lighting, tone, mood, storytelling. Clients who come in with a vision but are open to elevation. That’s where the magic happens.
If you care about the details, know your audience, and want someone who can translate your idea into something scroll-stopping or unforgettable, we’ll get along just fine.
