Meet Melanie B

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melanie B. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Melanie , so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?

Whenever I get to the point when I can’t write, or my characters doesn’t want to talk at the moment, I take a step back from writing. Take a few days off and then come back to the book. That has always helped me

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I work full time as a security professional. I love my job but creating stories as a published author is what I enjoy. I started writing three years ago. I never thought I could do it until one day I decided to pen my first book. It wasn’t easy but I push through. Now I have 12 books, 3 are number one best sellers. I am currently working on my first indie book that’s due to drop in late October. I’m nervous but thrilled about it.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Learning to be patient. Your craft takes time. Don’t rush it.

Don’t be afraid to take risks. Except the outcome. Good or bad. Learn from them and don’t let them discourage you.

Don’t take criticism to heart. Being an author there will be readers that will not like what you write. It’s okay. Not everyone will.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Life isn’t easy. Daily I have to find something to smile about and to keep pushing. My biggest challenges that I’m facing right now is grief and depression. I’m a widow. Losing my husband two years ago so suddenly put me in a dark place. I didn’t want to write anymore; I felt like my biggest supporter was no longer here, pushing and rooting for me. But after seeking therapy and continuing to do what I love, which is writing, I realized that these things have been helping me through those difficult challenges. Life goes on and I am going to continue to push through every obstacle life throws at me. The journey won’t be easy, I know, but I’m determined to come out on top.
