We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mélanie Béranger. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mélanie below.
Mélanie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Early in my career, I often doubted whether I was ‘enough’—enough experience, enough skill, enough creativity. Working freelance and taking on diverse projects helped me confront this feeling head-on. I realized that growth comes from doing, not from waiting to feel ready. I focus on learning from each project, celebrating small wins, and letting my work speak for itself. Over time, I’ve learned to reframe self-doubt as a signal to push myself further rather than a limitation.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an art director and designer whose journey was driven by a deep fascination with how visuals can shape perception, create meaning, and evoke emotion. What really drives me is curiosity—curiosity about people, ideas, and how they can be expressed visually.
I don’t see art direction as a rigid field with boundaries. I love drawing inspiration from science, nature, philosophy, art and the fields of design to create work that feels fresh and unexpected. My approach is highly intuitive. I experiment first, let ideas emerge organically, then refine them through research and strategic thinking. This process allows me to create work that’s not only visually striking but deeply rich in meaning and intent.
What truly excites me is witnessing the transformation of an abstract idea into a tangible visual world. I love taking a concept and exploring how it can evolve into something far beyond a simple set of assets. How it can feel like an entire world you want to step into and explore, where every detail, texture, light, and element plays its role in communicating deeper meaning.
One of the most exciting part for me is that blend of intuition and craft. Those moments when experimentation and careful thought meet, and something unexpected emerges.
Currently, I’m focused on developing my own practice while building projects that push boundaries and allow me to experiment with visual language. Ultimately, I want my work to spark curiosity, inspire, and leave a subtle but lasting impression. Creating experiences that go beyond aesthetics and resonate both emotionally and conceptually.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that have been and are still absolutely crucial to my journey are :
1. Embracing curiosity over specialization
Early on, I thought I needed to pick one lane and stick to it. But my biggest breakthrough came when I realized that my diverse interests weren’t distractions, they were my secret weapon. This multidisciplinary curiosity allows me to bring unexpected perspectives to every project.
2. Developing intuitive confidence
I’m still learning to trust my instincts while balancing them with strategic thinking. It’s an ongoing process of unlearning the need to justify every creative decision with logic from the start. I’m getting better at knowing when to experiment freely and when to step back and analyze.
3. Seeing collaboration as creative fuel
I used to think great design came from individual genius, but my best work has always emerged from genuine collaboration. Learning to listen deeply, translate others’ visions, and let ideas evolve through collective input transformed both my process and my results.
My advice for those starting out would be not to suppress your varied interests or rush to find your “niche”. Lean into what makes you curious, even if it seems unrelated to design. Give yourself permission to experiment without knowing where it’s going. Actively seek out people who think differently than you and collaborate with them. Most importantly, trust that your unique combination of interests and perspectives is exactly what will set you apart. The creative world doesn’t need another copy of what already exists. It needs your specific way of seeing things. Stop trying to fit into existing categories and start building something that feels authentically yours.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! Collaboration is at the heart of my best work, so I’m always open to connecting with like-minded creatives and visionaries.
I’m particularly drawn to working with people who share that same curiosity-driven approach. Whether you’re a brand founder with a bold vision, a creative director pushing boundaries, or another designer exploring unconventional territories. I love partnering with people who aren’t afraid to experiment, who bring perspectives I don’t have and who see creative challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.
I also value collaborators who understand that great work takes time to develop. People who appreciate the process of letting ideas evolve, who enjoy the back-and-forth of refining concepts, and who see collaboration as a genuine creative dialogue rather than just task delegation.
If any of this resonates with you and you’re working on something that excites you, I’d genuinely love to hear about it. You can reach me at melanieberanger.com or on Instagram @melanie_beranger 🙂
