We recently connected with Melanie Eaton and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
It all started with a few highlights and a Mary Kay party.
I was thirteen, wide-eyed and eager to figure out who I was and how I fit into the world. My mom, my ultimate hype woman and adventure guide, let me invite a few friends over for a Mary Kay birthday bash. That day, I didn’t just get my first makeover; I witnessed firsthand the power of beauty and self-care. Makeup didn’t just change how I looked, it changed how I felt. Something inside me lit up. I discovered the magic of self-expression.
But let’s be real, confidence doesn’t just appear with a swipe of lip gloss.
I started noticing all the things that made me different. My nose? Oh, that little bump in the middle became my middle school nemesis. I was teased for it, classic “awkward phase” trauma. I used to avoid side-profile pictures like the plague. But eventually, I started to see it differently. It wasn’t just a nose, it was my nose. Bold. Distinct. A little bit quirky, just like me. And more than that, it’s a connection to my Italian roots, and to my grandfather I never got to meet. My mom always said I got his nose, and now I wear it proudly like a badge of honor.
Then there was the whole “waiting for puberty to do its thing” saga. I remember staring at my chest wondering when my boobs were going to show up. Spoiler alert: they eventually did. And guess what? Now I miss the days when I didn’t have to deal with backaches and boob sweat. Turns out, bigger isn’t always better. (Seriously, it’s not all it’s “boobed” up to be. 😉)
And don’t even get me started on my feet. Long toes, inherited straight from my dad, my mom used to say, “Those are your father’s toes!” like I’d won some kind of prize. Back then, I wasn’t so sure. Now? I’ve come to appreciate them. These feet are tough. They’ve carried me through the rough patches of life, literally and figuratively. Rocky trails, hot pavement, emotional landmines, you name it. They’re not delicate, but they’re durable. And that’s something I’ve learned to admire.
My crooked smile was another insecurity. When I laugh, one side of my mouth kind of does its own thing. I used to cringe watching it in photos. Now? It’s the smile that bursts out when I’m laughing like a hyena or telling an animated story. It’s goofy, yes, but it’s me. And it’s genuine. That kind of joy can’t be posed or polished, and that’s what makes it beautiful.
If you’re into personality types, you’ll understand when I say that as an ENFP, self-expression is basically in my DNA. But that doesn’t mean self-love came easy. I spent years chasing perfection, thinking I had to fit into a certain mold to be accepted. I’ve since learned that the mold is a lie. Confidence isn’t about blending in, it’s about standing out. It’s about owning your quirks and loving the things that make you different.
One day, you’ll look back and realize those awkward years weren’t awkward, they were golden. They were your training ground. The moments you tried to shrink? They taught you how to expand. I’m no longer the girl trying to fit in—I’m the woman who understands that fitting in was never the goal. The goal was to be seen, to embrace the chaos and the magic of being uniquely, messily, beautifully ME.
Confidence and self-esteem didn’t arrive all at once, they grew from the seeds of every moment I doubted myself and chose, instead, to keep showing up. Every laugh, every scar, every so-called “flaw” is part of my story. And now, I wouldn’t trade a single one of them.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Melanie Eaton, professional photographer, creative, and founder of a luxury fashion, boudoir, and branding photography experience based in Richmond, VA. I specialize in helping women reconnect with their power, confidence, and bold self-expression through personalized, high-end photoshoots. Whether it’s a boudoir session that feels like a reclamation, a branding shoot that captures your essence, or a fashion-forward editorial moment, my work is about so much more than the image, it’s about the transformation behind it.
What makes my business special is the passion behind it. I built this brand as a response to my own personal journey of healing, rediscovery, and empowerment. Every detail, from the glam squad to the custom posing playbooks to the luxe albums, is crafted to make women feel worthy, celebrated, and unforgettable.
Right now, I’m especially excited about The ME Program, my signature annual membership that gives women access to four themed photoshoots a year, professional videography, empowerment tools, a vibrant community, and gorgeous printed keepsakes. We’re gearing up for an upcoming group shoot titled “Power in Heels,” where I’ll be photographing the incredible women in the program and we will be capturing it all on video as well. Stay tuned, it’s going to be fierce!
At the core, my mission is this: to remind women who they really are and to embrace their unique beauty.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, authenticity, and creative vision.
Resilience helped me move through the inevitable ups and downs of entrepreneurship. From burnout to self-doubt to navigating motherhood while building a business, resilience is what kept me going. My advice: give yourself permission to pivot, pause, and rest, but never stop. Your ability to keep showing up for your dream is your superpower.
Authenticity allowed me to build a brand that’s not only personal but deeply connected to the people I serve. When you lead with heart and share your story, the right people find you. For anyone just starting out, my advice is: stop trying to be “perfect” and start being real. Your vibe will attract your tribe.
Creative vision gave me the courage to make my business an extension of my artistry and soul. Whether it’s organizing a shoot or designing a themed set, creativity fuels everything. To sharpen that skill, immerse yourself in inspiration, take risks, and never stop learning.
You don’t need to have it all figured out, just bring your passion and remember why you started.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I’m currently facing is scaling my business while maintaining the level of quality and personalization my clients know and love. As demand grows, especially with the popularity of The ME Program and my luxury themed shoots, there’s a fine balance between expanding my reach and still delivering that deeply intentional, empowering experience.
To overcome this, I’m focused on building better systems, streamlining my workflows, and bringing in the right support team, from reliable assistants on shoot days to automation tools that handle the backend without losing the personal touch.
It’s definitely a growth season, but I remind myself that this challenge is a sign of progress. I’m not trying to do more just for the sake of “more,” I’m building something that’s sustainable, soulful, and still magical for every woman who steps in front of my lens.
