Meet Melicha McKenzie

We were lucky to catch up with Melicha McKenzie recently and have shared our conversation below.

Melicha, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

After years of working just to pay bills, I realized that I wasn’t happy. I knew that when I was in my suite, doing hair, I was most comfortable because I get to interact with people and build connections. There has been so many times my clients would tell me they feel so comfortable with me and they get excited for their appointments. Most of my clients are moms and as we know being a mom is a full time job in itself and taking that time away is very important. Making these connections and building a space where I can help people feel more confident and be able to unwind after a hard day is what I call the good life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As a dedicated Loctician, braider, and beauty entrepreneur, I’ve made it my mission to help others not only care for their locs, but truly fall in love with their hair. Through every style, class, and conversation, I aim to restore confidence, celebrate natural beauty, and empower people to embrace their crown with pride. I’m the founder of Truly Loc’d Collection, a growing line of nourishing, loc-friendly products created with intention and care. Whether you’re part of my chair, my classroom, or my community, you’ll always be reminded: your hair is powerful, and so are you.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Patience and grace! Sometimes we as business owners and as people who are always striving for excellence, sometimes we just have to be patient and let God work. What he has for us surpasses anything we could have dreamed of and it’s worth the wait! When times get tough, hold on to all the good that you have done and remind yourself that your time is coming!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

God, my husband, and my business coach. God for guiding me through my journey and opening my eyes to my own talents and abilities to prosper for his glory, my husband for supporting me everyday and encouraging me to keep going when I get discouraged, my business coach who gives me the strategies for success in my business.
